Why would anyone do this? PO wanted a little more noise, I guess. Was probably convinced it would give him more power. Apparently this allowed moisture to collect in the mufflers and rust them out. I guess since it's already ruined, I could weld it closed while I shop for a solution. Any ideas?

People do some goofy stuff sometimes.
Just be forwarned though, those pipes are hard to find.
I think we had a few members searching for some at the same time.sigpic

From what I've seen with other bikes and AZR's 1000's is the pipes rust period. That's why good one's are few and far between. Not even looking for stockers for my Skunk project because I could not afford the shipping let alone the pipes

Got the cam chain tensioner resealed and reinstalled. Removed, anti-siezed, and reinstalled the vacuum port screws to make the sync easier later. Bead blasted the sealing surface of the intake boots and have new o-rings and SS screws ready to go on tomorrow. Got o-rings, bowl gaskets and top cover gaskets to rebuild the carbs. Should finish them by next weekend. Was dreading removing the exhaust bolts for fear of breaking them off, but I put a 1/4" ratchet on them and they all came loose. Will probably replace them with studs. Just testing them, not removing the exhaust yet. Really want to remove the Windjammer but have decided to wait until I get the bike running better. Removing it would surely make it easier to check the valve clearances. Also, I need a 1979 MO motorcycle license plate to use as a Historic plate if anyone knows a dealer for old plates.

Haven't touched the carbs for lack of time. Did install the intake boots and remove the Windjammer, rear crash bars and luggage rack. May have a line on a good, stock exhaust system. Hope that works out. Got to digging through the boxes that the PO included with the bike. I love it when the PO keeps EVERYTHING. I've got everything I need to reinstall the headlight and turn signals, plus the rear pegs and the paperwork for the aftermarket ignition and the Windjammer!

I'm remounting the stock headlight. Can't decide which is left and right on the brackets. Tried to upload a pic from my iPod with no success. Seems that one way places the h/l bucket higher. Is this the correct mounting?

Yes, as you discribe is correct.
I asked this very same question a while back when I was putting mine back together. Only I posted pics
Some mount em upside down do to preference.
Dont ask me why cause it makes for one helluva gap between the dash and headlight bucket.sigpic

Soaked carbs in this stuff for 24 hrs, followed by Gumout spray carb cleaner. Carbs look like new. Made sure all the jets and needles matched. 95s and 15s. Will reassemble this weekend. The big question now is, since I've already got the top clamp off the forks to remount the headlight, and I've got to pull the front wheel for the new Battlax's I ordered, do I go ahead and pull the lower clamp out and clean and regrease the stem bearings? I'm leaning toward doing it, should probably get rid of the 1979 grease. Found a stock exhaust the guy says is in good shape, haven't seen it yet. $150. I'm just about to turn the corner on this thing and start reassembly. Got a few small wiring issues from the Windjammer installation 30 years ago. All stock headlight pieces were removed then and boxed. It all looks brand new!

Kinda sad when you see them like this, huh? But I have the last carb soaking now, and new tires/tubes coming along with a new air filter. Dropped a spring as I was disassembling the last carb. Long flashlight search and I found it! Starting tomorrow, this process goes in the other direction. Cleaning and regreasing the neck bearings tonight, reinstalling tomorrow. Found evidence of tinkering with the carbs, one was missing most of the bowl gasket, one float valve was stuck closed. Float was actually stuck up. That explains the lousy performance on my short ride after purchase.

It's got tapered bearings now. I'm sure they're not worn out, front end wasn't loose and those bearings hardly move at all. I'll take a better look at them after I clean them. I am glad I pulled them. Didn't this thing come with tapered bearings?
