First time GS1000 owner

It's always fun to start one up for the first time in God knows how long.
My 1000 took a while. Would bairly idle and couldnt gas it at all. Everything was adjusted and installed correctly. I guess it was just trashed up inside the cylinders. Once it got going it would blow soot from the exhaust. So much that I had to sweep the garage floor. After this is would start, idle and rev perfect. Still needs a sync.

I don't know when the PO changed the tank, but it was used. Not many people (until recently) repainted in factory colors, and made sure the striping was correct. And the PO surely wouldn't repaint in the wrong factory colors. It's a 1 owner, (I've got the original title dated 6/79). I'm still going with factory paint on a very early '80 tank with a '79 petcock. Or maybe it's a tank from a different model? But I do know this, it runs. Mounted the petcock and tank, hit the choke and starter and off she went! Sounds good. Carbs aren't quite right, backfires in the mid-range, but it will idle all day and fire right off when I hit the button. Rode it a mile or so, rides much better with new rubber and grease in the neck. Shorter bars (and no Windjammer) make a huge difference. Haven't put a timing light on it yet or synced the carbs. Seems to run a little better every time I fire it. I did gap the plugs before I fired it, but I did not replace them. Next step is to get new plugs and check timing with light. Make sure all the carbs are actually getting fuel. Get the basics right before I start fiddling with carbs. Haven't mentioned the points because this thing has an aftermarket Gerex brand electronic ignition. May well be 30 years old. May invest in a new one soon.

I've got a pretty bad oil leak at the filter. Only leaks under pressure. (when running) Haven't checked anything yet. Bike has new oem filter and cover o-ring. Didn't leak a drop the month it sat. Only leaks when running. Any ideas?

Thinking about stepping up to a new ignition. Dynatek seems to be popular here. I don't plan on upgrading the motor, other than carbs/exhaust. I'm wondering if I'll have any issues installing the Dynatek after removing the Gerex the PO installed? Don't know if the points plate or anything was modified or parts removed. Mechanical advance is there and works well. Has anyone done this?

is sealing correctly it shouldn't be leaking from where the cover mates up to the engine or any of the stud bolts. If you have a '78 cover, it has it's own separate drain bolt, could be leaking from that, those were discontinued on '79 on models.sigpic

Haven't checked it out yet. Think I'll point it uphill in the drive tomorrow and pull the cover. Maybe won't lose too much oil. Then strip off the old ignition. Got the new Dynatek ordered, and new plugs.

Oil leak was no problem, just a pinched o-ring. Dynatek went on with no issues, bike started right up and idled fine. Not running quite right, though. Thought I'd post a link here to a thread I started in the Electrical/Ignition area. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...d.php?t=181276 Didn't get much response over there. Wanted to make sure my coils are good. Electricity is not my strongest suit. Apparently I checked them correctly, but I'm not sure if my readings are good or bad. I'm assuming they are good, since the readings are almost identical. I suppose my next check should be secondary with the wires attached to the coils. One of my plug wires seems to be giving odd readings, but I'm not sure I'm checking it correctly. Only that it's reading is different than the other 3. I simply connected the leads from the meter to the ends of the wire with meter set at 20k. First hint of a problem, besides rough running, was no flash on my timing light when hooked up to No. 1 plug wire. I've got new NGK caps I can use to make up new wires if the consensus is that this type of wire is ok to use. Thanks in advance for any responses.

On the GS 1000, the same coil fires cylinders 1 and 4 while the other coil fires 2 and 3.
If the problem only comes from #1 this means that there is some arcing between the HT lead and the frame somewhere.
You can check this by running the engine in the dark and watching for any spark along the HT lead.
I personally doubt that this is the issue and I would recommend that you check if there is a spark at the spark plug first.
To do so, undo the spark plug and let it dangle with the lead attached but making sure the body touches the cylinder head.
Start the engine and watch the sparks.
It sounds very basic but as you mentionned you are not an electricity expert I thought it could help?
I also installed a Dynatech on one of my GS's and it works fine as long as you keep the mechanical advance in place.sigpicJohn Kat

Have good secondary resistance on both coils now. Having some issues with the Dynatek. Talked to their tech guy and decided to return it for service. Bike was running well but not perfect. Then decided to just slowly die. Completely. No spark on all 4 cyls. All of my checks led back to the ignition. Got their troubleshooting paperwork out and confirmed. Hope that doesn't take long. This thing is licensed and insured and ready to go. Tempted to buy another just so I don't have to wait. Seems silly though. Guess I could buy another bike to go with the extra ignition!

GSR member amxsteve is parting a '81 1100e. Will these brake rotors bolt-on to my '79? Only wanting the look of the slotted rotors, not expecting any huge performance gains. Told him I would also buy the calipers if needed and also the swingarm if it's a bolt-on. Anyone have an idea if this is a bolt-on? This being my first Suzuki, I really don't have a clue what is interchangable. Thanks!
