          The pod filters got here.


          Installed on all 4 carbs.


          Tried to start the bike and this is what happens.

          Tried to start the GS1100 today but no luck. The starter cranks the engine over but there is no sign of it firing. I have spark on all 4 plugs and fuel gets ...


          It doesn't start! I had it running with the t-shirt thingy a few days ago. The starter cranks the engine over but there is no sign of it firing. Spark is good on all 4 plugs, fuel gets to all 4 cylinders, compression is good on all 4. Battery measures 12.74v resting and 11.09v cranking with headlight on.

          I think the valves are tight but I don't know how to adjust the valves .

            Just read through the article on BassCliff's site for adjusting 16 valve engines. No shims!

            I've only done a valve adjustment once in my whole life and that was with a Chevy 350 small block. This is how I did it. Pulled one valve cover off. Start the engine. Tighten the valves until I heard it hit the pistons. Then loosened it until I did not hear the sound anymore. Repeat with all other valves.

            I guess that way won't work with the GS1100 engine, huh?

            Now I'm browsing eBay for some metric feeler gauges.

              No need for metric feeler gauges. Just adjust to between 3 and 5 thousandths of an inch. It helps to have two sets of feeler gauges so you can out one under each follower finger to get a more accurate reading. If you really want to make the job easy get some Motion Pro Tappet Feeler Gauges and Tappet Tool Set. The job can be done easily enough using regular feeler gauges and wrenches but the Motion Pro stuff makes it a real breeze.

                Thanks Joe! I was looking at that Tappet set but noticed the price. $40.....

                I'm just going to use wrenches and that home made tool. Look! I already found a screw with a square that fits perfectly on the valves .











                Everything appears to be in good shape. The top end oiler is confirmed to be working. I did borrow a set of metric feeler gauges from my neighbor and the smallest one did not even fit under the valves! I followed all instructions in the guide and even the cam shaft location mark thingy.

                I measured under that thingy. Yeah... Don't know what it's called lol. Under the thing that makes contact with the valve and pushes it down.



                The valves are tight as I thought. That would explain the hard starting.

                      Sears should be open til 9. I bought a set of Craftsman valve feeler gauges that have both metric and standard measurements on them...

                                Whom needs a wooden dowel? just cut the screw length so it's long enough to be useful and file it down so it's square, use a shifter to get a bit of accuracy, then worry about getting a dowel, drilling the centre out and epoxying it in later on.
