Just bought a 1978 GS750E, introduction and plans for the bike

Hey guys been lurking for about a week now doing research on a bike a just bought. Its a 1978 GS750 with 20,000 miles on it for $800. I first began riding when I was 19 years old (25 now) with a 1999 honda CBR 600F4, rode that for a couple years and stepped up to a 2002 Yamaha R1, I was in a bad accident with that bike went down doing about 95mph, fixed the bike rode it for another summer and then sold it to buy a Cadillac CTS...lol have been wanting a bike ever since but the fiance doesnt so I convinced her to let me get an older bike (I said they were slow and I couldnt do wheelies) but we know the GS750 is a quick bike for a 1978.

This is the cleanest mid to late 70's bike in my budget that looks this good and runs great that I have found in my area. He is throwing in a box full of parts, I guess there is an electronic ignition and other crap in there too. Hes actually 4 hours away but is delivering it to me also, so bonus for me since I dont have any way to haul it.

I plan on making it into a cafe style. First will be new bars, going to go with clip ons cuz I want to lower the front a bit and clubmans as I found out from here dont allow you to lower very much at all. Then im getting some longer shocks for the rear found some on ebay that are 13.5" long so that should be good I hope. I heard that 14" is a good length but I cant find any I like for on the cheap at that length but the 13.5" ones are adjustable alittle. For the seat, it will be custom...will probably get a seat off of a CB750 and modify it and fit on a Triumph Thruxton rear cowl, cuz my fiance wants to ride occasionally so I want it to be removable and still have the look when shes not riding with me. Oh and new sprockets and chain cuz the one thats on it is crap so im going to go with a 530 instead of a 630.

Im sure there will be more plans as I go but thats what I want to do within a week or two of me having it. On to the bike!!!

I like the emerald green. My wife just loves that color!
If you are going to be changing the tank, side covers and tail piece, please give me a buzz via PM.
I could do a complete "paint job", as it were, on one of my current bikes for her.

      Welcome to the forums.
I for one think a 750, if done right would look awesome as a Cafe.

        Howdy!
Go to Z1 Enterprises for chain and sprocket upgrade.
Watch out for clip-ons that are too low, they can mash the tank on full lock.
Superbike bars are a good mid-way height.

Thanks guys, cant wait to get the bike. Should be delivered friday.

          As for sprockets I didnt see a 530 kit on Z1 for the 78 750E only 630's

And im not a fan of superbike bars, I want to be leaned over like on a sportbike, since thats what im used to and what looks best. My plan was to lower the front down and use the part of the fork that gets pushed above the triple to mount the clip ons, I found some Tommaselli clips ons in 35mm so Im hoping I can grab those cheap.

As for the green, its getting turned into black. Im going to try a vinyl wrap to preserve the factory paint and since I dont have space to paint it as of yet.

And Octain, your bike looks sweet and is kinda the look im going for.

Most of the stuff that they have at Z1 is not on the website.
Just call them or send an E-mail as to what you are looking for.
