Glad to be of help, but to be fair my technique was half POR 15's guide and half Nessism's recommendations...

well the tank just got its first coat of clear. the paint job turned out pretty good. far from perfect but i give at an 8 out of 10. To my defense it was a very difficult job to pull off. I ended up going with the black but i got a can of gunmetal grey and ghosted some flames on there. there were a couple spots where the paint ran under the tape but i managed to take a dremel and grind them out with minimal damage. it will look good from a few feet away but the closer you get the more flaws will show up.

shot with the top detail.
time to start sourcing parts. going with 10.5 rear shocks to lower. will do the mock up with GS wheels but I do need spoke wheels for the finished product.

my tank and fender is the same way. up close you can see the imperfections and it looks like a home job. but from a couple feet away it looks pretty nice.
and lemme know where you find some spoke wheels. i need one for the rear of my bike. lol

Found your thread today and wanted to chime in that not everyone here is against bobbing an "L". Keep the updates coming!
the headlight is a honda or something and is way too big. Anyone got a lead on a good shape L headlight?
Any how, I'll be watching here

Hmmm. I got the OEM headlight from mine, and think about a larger one. Let me know if you still want one to replace that 7" Honda unit, I can take some better detailed pics of it... and see some of yours, be nice if we could just swap.

well everything has gone straight to hell on my build. the nice tank has rusted even though I clear coated it. probably has something to do with the fact that the humidity in KY has been around the 1000%.
next I hooked up the carbs and the battery, nothing would register. when unhooking the battery the ground cable snapped and I let the smoke out. Going to strip the entire thing and go through the entire harness. so I can see what useable parts i am left with (hopefully most of them).
Still no idea where I am on rejetting. I know i will have to, carbs have stock jetting and I only have pods.
so this project just got longer and even more drawn out. especially since there are only a few hours a day that i can work in my unheated workshop.
fun times. I'll go get my voltage tester and start the super exicting workof testing and fixing my wiring harness.

Man that sucks, but thankfully those days are usually few and far between...
I've heard clear coating a bare metal tank can be a royal PITA and if you leave even the slightest little unfinished nick in the clear coat, it will flash rust underneath... that's why I didn't end up clear coating my case covers. If I can't guarantee a perfectly sealed coat, it'll end up looking like crap and I won't be able to do anything about it except strip the clear coat and start again...
That's really strange that the negative wire disconnecting would let the smoke out, something else would've had to short surely? Either way, good luck with finding the issues, wiring's definitely one of those tediously painful jobs that just plain suck.
The advice I got from Tranzac with my new pipe and K&N's is one notch down on the needle to raise it, and up two main jet sizes, leaving the pilots as is. That's simply what he recommended as a starting point and to go from there.
I feel your pain as to the time... If I'm lucky I get an hour or so later at night to do some stuff, and every month or two I get part or all of a Saturday to knock some stuff off, makes it really slow going...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

been a while since i updated but I have still been working. i have the bike completely in pieces need to do some grinding on the frame to smooth out some of the things i have cut. after the frame is cut i have some fabrication work to do. going to cut off the stock engine mounts and re weld them on the top side of the frame to raise the tank also going to raise the back an inch or 2. also have to fabricate some fender mounts etc.
got the new suspension components in. the intruder front end looks nice, havent measured everything up right yet but i will probably have to fab up a few spacers to get the wheel to fit right. I got the roller minimally set up just to get an idea of what the geometry will look like. YSS shocks on the back are 270s so dropped about 2.5 inches back there.
