Right on Pete. Gave the carbs a good cleaning out with a bottle brush, tooth brush and some q-tips. Got all the passageways just about clear and clean. Its the main chamber that is giving me the most headaches. It looks as if there is some corrosion (etching) in there. That or its just caked on so bloody hard. Gave it a quick dry scrub with the tooth brush just before and that seemed to help. Now I've got those babies soaking in 4 liters of that purple goodness.

Just a thought. Is it possible to recycle the petrol that I'm soaking them in? Or is the residue of the carb cleaner that is dissolved in it going to **** with everything? Just a thought.

Just going back through the posts to see roughly when I started soaking the things. They have been submerged fully for a few days short of 4 weeks and could probably do with another day or two.

        thats a long...

        row to hoe, stay strong.

I have a 425 myself and 'm lovin it. It's my first bike and I got nothing to compare it to, but once it gets rolling it's a blast to drive, handles great.

was wondering what kinda faring that's in the foreground of your avatar picture. I was thinking of adding one to mine.

        regards

Its custom, apparently. Thats what the previous owner told me. It looks pretty custom too if you get my meaning. I'm not planning on using it myself since it was made to fit the bike with clubmans attached. Oh and don't even get me started on the paint job. Hippies shouldn't be aloud to own bikes. Or at least earn enough money to be able to afford the paint...

I've got to be optimistic about this. If you could see this hunk of junk in person you'd understand. Its the only way!

Hahahaaha mate you sound like me and my fibreglass tail piece... optimism is the only way I'm gettin' through that too!

I wouldn't be reusing that fuel if I was you, not only does it have carb cleaner in it but it has remnants of whatever crud is still causing you grief in there. I wouldn't wanna put that back through them after I just finished cleaning it out of there...

The other mixture I believe is 50/50 fuel and metho...

Yeah, its a bitch. But its all fun and learning. I've decided, after all options are spent, I'm just gonna slap it back together and aim to get her running in the end. This is an educational toy after all .

What to do next then? Maybe the camshafts. Kinda work my way down.

                    Hahaha educational indeed!!!

What do you need to do with the camshafts? Anything in particular wrong with them?

Thought I'd give them a tidy up. Quite a bit of rust and build up going on. The plan of attack for this project is to just tear through the whole thing and see what needs fixing, cleaning and replacing.

Any tips as to how I should go about handeling the camshafts?

Rust on the camshafts or the cam lobes? How bad?

If there's some very minor surface rust, then I'd let the normal valve actuation take care of it. Mine has a minor amount of corrosion on them, but the brief run of my engine I did was enough to clean all that up with the oil circulating through there.

If there's actual rust, then you need to be ultra careful so you don't alter the cam lobe spec's. If they're too bad it may be better to try to source another one...

Its everywhere really... But at the moment I'm referencing from the pictures I took. I'll get into them tomorrow and properly asses the damage then.

Aaah I'd forgotten you'd had pic's there, just went and looked again...

That rust on the cam lobes could be an issue or it may be easily sorted, not sure.

You will need to measure them very carefully as you sort them out to ensure they're not out of spec.

I suspect some very fine sand paper *might* be ok to see if you can rub it back if it's only on the surface, but I'm not really sure...

Now Greg... of course you will need optimism with that... it's a Hon-duh

How's she coming along? Any progress?

I just saw your post on the new 425 thread and saw you said about off road, must've missed that earlier...

If you have the same size rims as the 450E (1.65 x 18 F, 1.80 x 18 R) then you can get a Pirelli Skorpion Trail front (100/90-18) and a Pirelli Skorpion MT90A/T (4.10-18) if that suits... can't comment as to rideability just yet but I hope to know by Chrissy...
