      Landshark had another solution which was half fuel and half metho.

      Here's my original thread on the topic:



      You don't have to boil it like I did, but leave it for a lot longer. I boiled it because I had a really short amount of time to do it.

      Also, be sure to follow up with a good hard spray down with a hose, followed by blowing through all the passages with compressed air, followed by the same but with carby cleaner, then compressed air again.

          Went down to my local Yamaha today and ordered the 944mL bottle of carb cleaner today. So hopefully those bastards will be clean by the end of next week.

          The weather this week has been so good. I've been doing all my work outside. Here is where I'm set up:



          A little cramped I know.



          This pile of junk is stuff that is salvageable. They all also need a major overhaul.



          And following is the the rust I have to deal with once I'm done with the carbs.





          This is the front fender (rear is plastic) with some of the rust removed. I'm sure you've all seen this shot before but I'll put it up anyway.



          And another shot of the carbs just because I know you all love them so much.

            Aww man you got some work ahead of you for sure! The only bit I see there that's really worth mentioning is those camshafts. You wanna be real careful with how you deal with any rust on the cam lobes and bearing journals etc.

            I unfortunately left mine out of the engine for about 5 or 6 years before I got to putting them back in a gain and they had a minor touch of that on the cam lobes but I decided to just leave it and see if the oil + friction takes care of it, but I think yours will need some more attention than that...

            Most of the rest should be fairly straight forward though...

              I thought my 1000 carbs where bad!Actually they where,varnished to immobility.Did not look like that inside though.Looks like you have just a bit of a project there.Be interested to see how it goes.

                The Yamalube carb cleaner arrived today. Very excited. Two problems that have arisen though. 1: Pete, you asked this very same question, is it 2 parts cleaner to 1 part water, or 1 part cleaner to 2 parts water (as per the bottles instructions)? and 2: My throttle valves are dead stuck. The CV boots are rooted any way. Should I just chuck it all into the mix and see what survives? or should I endeavor with my struggle and set them free? HEEEEEELLP!! As you could imagine.

                  Well according to post #550 in my rebuild thread (just trawled through it again... sheesh) I used 2:1 Yamalube to water, so 500mL's water in with the whole bottle.

                  Because I was boiling though, I had to top it up with water at one point due to evaporation.

                  Just remember... this stuff stinks!!!! Not the best fumes to be breathing I would imagine, especially if simmering away...

                        I tell you what. Its been a busy past couple of weeks. Work on the bike has been slow going when I get the chance! But I am making some progress. Some. Almost considering throwing in the towel on the carbs, but we'll wait and see after tomorrows day of work... I'll put some more photos up soon to show you what progress has been made so far.

                          Don't get it near paint, skin, pets, fireplaces, etc..

                          As for cookie dough, the only time I've seen carbs that bad was when an old drag racing mate was told to slip a little methanol in his tank.
                          He applied More's Law (If some is good, more is better) and the carbs filled up with sticky green jelly.

                          Stick to your guns and you'll come out with something you can boast about for a long time.

                            Mate progress is good, stick with it

                            I've found myself seemingly up against brick walls with no time to spare etc. only to realise I could still do this one little bit here or there which means one little bit less to do later.

                            I've been attempting to do at least one thing no matter how small each night. That hasn't worked the last few days because I've been feeling like crap, but usually it works well and can really help reveal that light at the end of the tunnel... it's not always a freight train hurtling towards you

                            Looking forwards to the progress pic's and when you get this done you will feel incredibly satisifed with your efforts and wonder why you ever doubted yourself

                              Thanks for the pep talk Pete. Always appreciated mate. Updates are slow, I apologize. Just wish life would get the **** out of the way so I can make some progress. But baby steps are probably best anyhow.

                              Looking at all those numbers and thinking. "****! Thats just for the carbs?!" But it's mostly screws, washers, gaskets and o-rings. Also some of the more delicate parts like the jet needles. Just cos. I'm also wanting to replace all the screws and washers because they are the most essential pieces of the puzzle that will be holding this thing together. Not knowing the official service history of this thing or the age of the parts, I'm assuming that they are as old as the bike herself. And therefore have been structurally weekend due to heavy riding and stress from all the vibrating they have taken over the years. Which will be a general rule that I will be following throughout the build. I'm also planning to ride her pretty hard, so better to be safe then sorry.

                              After all that, the carbs are actually coming along pretty nicely. The Yamalube Carb Cleaner is all but spent and not quite everything has been removed. It's mostly greasy residue. So the next plan of attack is to soak them in petrol, give em a spray with both an engine degreaser and another can of carb cleaner. They should be looking pretty shinny and new after that. At least the inside will. Not to concerned about the exterior.

                              And yes, more photos are coming. **** I'm slack...

                                Mate this is good progress

                                Don't worry about replacing the jets, just clean them, they're fine and don't wear out or whatever. As long as the passages are clean it's all good

                                As for the screws, stainless allen heads look the part, but make sure to use anti seize on the threads.

                                Definitely do the gaskets and things though, well worth it at that age
