Sick bike man, I don't even wanna know how much you got in parts alone on this thing.
I bought that same exhaust for my 550 it sounds sick and I don't even have the carbs dialed in yet.

I've taken the bike out on 2-3 nice rides. The wideband has been awesome. I have the bike running pretty good. I need to just sink the carbs and adjust my valves before doing a finaly carb tune. I'm running a bit rich at idle which I should be able to tune out with the idle mix screws. WOT is running on the lean side but making great power. I'll probably bump up a couple sizes on the main jet and then fine tune the bottom end/ idle.
The bike rips so far and I know it has more in it. As of now I have alot of parts zip tied in place so I could get some seat time and test/tune the bike. I will get some videos and newer pics up shortly.1978 GS550 E

Update Time: I made a small bracket for the oil cooler lines to keep them from hitting my pipes. Replaced the Main jets up to 130s from 110 ands that seemed to be almost perfect. A bit on the rich side but it's also been humid and near 100 while I've been testing. The bike is ripping and pulling hard all the way up til 10500 rpms. I'd probably go further but I'm not sure how much more she can take. The gearing works great with the power. I could probably go up a tooth in the front and still retain the same pull with a little more topend but I topped out the bike and I don't think I'd want to go much faster due to stability ( est 115-20ish).
I'm going to try and get some riding video, which shouldnt be hard considering I'll be riding it alot now that the jetting is good. It still has a slight oil leak where I had the front center head pinch bolt break ( I really need to pull the head UGH too much work.) I've just been going over the bike retightening things and tweaking here and there. Really could use a solid valve adjust, carb sync, timing check to get it up to tip top spec.
I have a new seat coming so I'm going to work on getting the bike 100% together.My goal is to work out the bugs over the summer and fall and do a a tear down and paint/polish/dial in over the winter.1978 GS550 E

Very nice build !
I prefer the way the tail piece ends the line of the tank and seat, find it makes more sense with the age of the bike too.

Wow, this thing looks awesome! Great work on the build so far, can't wait to see the finished bike.
I think the tailpiece looks better on, it finishes the lines of the bike really nicely. Are you gonna move the tail-light up into the tail or leave it down my the swingarm? Personally I think it would look better in the tail piece, but thats just me.

Great thread. And yes i have a stupid ?, Is or is not the 81/82 550 block the same as the 81/82 650E, 81/82 550 have the clutch cable tang on the block.If so would it be easier to swap top end? thanks. SAN

you can put a gsx650f front end on it...but not a gsxr 650..as they dont make one ...
I don't know how long the forks are though. Might be a bit on the short side for a GS.... A B-12 front end would be a likely candidate....

My question now is, why could you not just use 4 of the 88 GSXR 750 intake boots, or 4 of the 92 GSXR750 intake boots???? Was it necessary to get the correct spacing? and would the stock GS650 boots not work? I measured the GS650 carb/boot spacing to be 75-82-75 center to center in mm, that's cyl's 1-2/cyl's 2-3/cyl's 3-4 spacing, respectively.
