        So i did get the exhaust fitted. Pics to come......got the carbs back in and put a little gas in it......it started pretty easy.....easier than before I redid the carbs.....ran for a little....definitely needs some adjustments......the left pipe was twice the temperature of the right pipe......hoping the adjustments will fix that ...but am planning on doing a compression test soon.......am making a temporary gas tank...probly just a bottle of some kind ....will it hurt if it is just a free flow or should it have some kind of valve on it.....

          Sounds promising

          First thing you'll want is a carb synch to make sure they're sucking fuel and air evenly. Lean will make it run hot I believe. Compression test is a good idea of course. Can't remember but have you checked your valve clearances?

          Here's my temporary tank... a whipper snipper fuel tank with a bit of fuel hose shoved in the bottom and a plain on/off fuel tap:



          Without the fuel tap is fine but disconnecting it from the carbs if it's not empty could be interesting... also make sure it's not too high up or the force of gravity on the fuel could cause it to overload the float valve spring and cause it to overflow.

            i havent checked the valve clearances yet due to there being only 6800 miles on it....but will do it if you really think that could be causing that problem

              Valve clearances should be checked roughly every 4000 miles anyway.

                Yup, and that can affect your carb sync etc. as well, and typically you do the valves before anything else.

                You may open her up only to find it's in spec, but personally I'd rather do that than do everything else only to find I had to open her up and repeat all the sync'ing again...

                  Pete,
                  Try and find one of those old red, rubber, Australian Army enema bags. They come with a hose and valve. Now that would give your bike some real character. One word of caution, never take anything I say, seriously.

                    one other thing i forgot to mention in my last post...after running it the other night i pulled the plugs out and they had traces of liquid on them....why and what is causing that....is it just to rich or is it another problem

                    well i ordered that valve cover gasket and the breather gasket.....should be here next week sometime......started taking the vavle cover off....got all the bolts loose and ready to be taken out but ran out of time....amazingly enough all the bolts and screws came loose without having to drill any out.....made me very happy......

                      When you say liquid, do you mean fuel?

                          Sort out your carbs, valves, etc. before worrying about any fuel on your plugs. Otherwise you could be chasing your tail if you try to fix that as well, one thing at a time will show you if something else is wrong

                            The gaskets were pretty old and brittle.....

                            Now I need to get a smaller feeler gauge...mine is too big....

                              Be smart and get a metric feeler gauge set. Much more accurate, go down to ultra thin, and no conversions required. They are inexpensive and will last a lifetime.
