It seems like there is gas getting down into the oil....is this because I just had a bottle with a hose running gas into the carbs without any kind of valve or is there an internal carb problem.....I took them apart and cleaned them and replaced all orings

If you leave the bottle there long enough fuel will eventually force it's way in, and if you have the bottle too high then I'm pretty sure the extra pressure from gravity will make it a bit worse.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

thats what i was thinking but wasnt sure...
i also came to realize while staring at a carb diagram this morning ...that my carbs are missing the springs on the air/fuel mixture screws.......and also they seem to be a discontinued item so i guess the search is on to find a used one...Last edited by Guest; 02-27-2012, 01:31 PM.

i found the springs from my local dealer for four bucks apiece........i also ordered a shim tool as well..
i also received my metric feeler gauge today....i found three valves to be at .03 mm and the intake valve on the left cylinder to be smaller than .02 mm......so im thinking that might be part of the problem of the left cylinder running a lot colder than the left????.
why would it be tighter than spec????can they tighten up or maybe it was to tight from factory??

Good score on the springs!
The wear that happens with the valves is the valves wearing into the valve seats, meaning the end of the valve actually gets closer to the cam lobe, so therefore the clearances decrease when wearing.
If they get too small a clearance, there's a risk they'll open too early and shut too late, and may even get held open a touch which affects compression also.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

You can try www.suziparts.com.au if it helps. He has NOS stuff, not sure if shipping will be worth it or anything and he's not cheap...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Good score on the eBay ones, but yes, parts bikes are always handy... I was fortunate enough that my bike was 100% complete.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Just in case you aren't aware, don't rotate the engine with that shim out...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Thanx for the heads up Pete.....I made sure not to do that
I drained the fork oil and it was pretty nasty looking....the manual says the tighter coiled end should be at the bottom...on mine it was at the top...
Also got the exhaust installed with new gaskets
Got the new clutch cable installed and got the sprocket cover back on ..
Also pulled the center stand off to paint it......Last edited by Guest; 03-03-2012, 06:54 PM.
