Early 1978 GS1000E project B/G

Perhaps somewhere along the line I was misinformed or misread but I was under the impression that the 78/79 1000E used VM26SS as well as the 750. The only VM28 model I am aware of were 28mm "pumpers" with an accelerator pump.

In Europe at least the GS 1000 SN came with 28 mm carbs without any accelerator pump.
The GS 1000 ST came with 30 mm carbs .
Here's a picture of the 4 generations of carbs that were used on the GS 1000.

Tell me, what's the deal with the covers over the pods? Haven't seen them before...

As for the socks, I had never seen them before either.
I had to google them by part number as they were new in the bags when I received the filters.
They are basically nylon screens that fit tightly over the filters with elastic at both ends. They come in 4 colors IIRC.
They were part of a package deal that included a large bottle of spray filter cleaner, a K & N oil and cleaner kit, 4 new filters and these socks.
Less than the price of the filters alone.

I had to grind down this end flush also.



Notch out a section for the brake lever under the triangular hole.
Enlarge the radius for brake spring clearance.
Elongate the rear peg mount hole.



Still have to paint the forward foot peg mount as polishing does no good.
Waiting on shoulder bolt to cover the center mount hole.
Finish installing the clutch cover allen screws.
Add the finned aluminum ignition cover and she gets some BLING!

Ordered up more bulk metric nuts, bolts, etc. today to add to my stash, picked them up and
ground and painted the footpeg mounts to match.

Finished BLING!



For giggles, I started it up again and it was effortless! I love the sound of a happy motor!
Tomorrow she gets an oil change with Rotella 5W-40 synthetic and some bling to the filter cover.
Hopefully, I will get the stock headlight mounted and some of those wires
Straightened out with some stock turn signals.

I have been following along quietly and enjoying this build, man, you do get a hurry on with it, she has gone from nothing to nice in no time at all, good work there.
I really do like that blue colour on it.

Since this project is getting shiny and all that, I had to change the handle bar to a Superbike bar and remove the black ES bar.
Also changed the M/C to one off of an '83 1100E and polished the cap/screws.
I might as well change this fine example of a brake hose while I am at it:





I found one from one of the '79 1000L parts bike's that was in a little better condition and close to the same length.



Got the headlight ears painted and all four turn signals installed along with the missing grab rail.
Changed the self-cancelling turn signal switchgear for one from a '79 750E as I don't like them at all.
Polished up a bunch of electrical connectors and cleaned the wires so that you can actually
see the different colors/codes instead of all being black.

More damage to the bike tomorrow...

I'm told the paint job looks like an '80, but the petcock is the levered type not used on the '80.

The '80 850G and 1000G both had levered petcocks. The L versions of the same bikes did not, they had the "dreaded" model with the screwdriver slot. Not sure what the chain-driven bikes had.

This was on upside down also so the wires exited on top rather than down.

Plenty of wiring screw ups to fix on this one.
Signal flasher and turn signal auto shut off were replaced with automotive flasher units.
(upper left corner in this pic)




Going to see if some '79 parts will replace them.

I pulled the triple tree off to take a peek at the bearings while I was adding the headlight ears
and missing brake "T" cover that I actually had in stock! It might even be for a '78. (I painted the scratched up sliver bars yesterday.)
Well the bearings were dry as a bone and rusted. No surprise there. No one ever seems to check them.
So, I replaced them and greased with synthetic wheel bearing grease.
Bled all of the brakes and M/C with D.O.T. 5.1 fluid.
Changed the seat to a '79 1000 seat and it was too short and just didn't feel right.
So, I changed it with a recovered seat that I had and it feels great! The emission sticker under the seat says that it is a '78 pan! Go figure.
Still didn't get the headlight in yet and it was getting dark so I threw the tank back on it and took it for it's first ride after getting it running and new upgraded brakes/rotors and suspension.
The brakes seem to work a little too good. They work as well as the brakes on the 2002 Aprilia. Less than one finger on the front is more than adequate.
Perhaps the combination of the GG pads and new roughed up surface on the rotors... NEW BRAKES!
Suspension also appears to resemble the spheres that are found on a woman's chest. Perfection!

More damage and hopefully some cleaned up bike pic's tomorrow...

Added the best of the headlights that I had laying around and the bug-eye mirrors from my
old '79 GS750E that i removed from it some 15 or so years ago.
I didn't like the idea of using double-sided sticky tape to apply the factory tank badges
so I custom ordered some to be made as stickers that should be here by the end of the week.
I also ordered some gold ones to be made for "Goldy". ('81 GS1000G project)
Until then, the tank shall remain naked.
She still needs a bath and plenty of more wiring repairs to do.
Here she is today as the Sun was setting complete with a water spot on the camera lens.(rear of seat )
