    10 thumbs 1 GS 400 1981 with dash damage

Although I get how the bloody thing works when it comes to taking primarily motorcycle engines apart I'm all thumbs or possibly starting front to back. Is there any way a novice like myself with only basic hand tools spanners some ratchets could take apart and remove motor from the frame? The electrtics I can leave to a proffessional as my attention span is laboured at best ,but I thought at least I could keep my costs down by preparing the bike for service and rebuild and then get stuck into the cosmetics.
Cosmetically dash is busted from bike being dropped on it's side( as mentioned in my initial welcome post I was travelling straight came to a set of lights and drifted across the lane as I slowed down,I put this down to wet roads or oil residue but turns out that about 100metres back I had gone over a slight jump and my sump bolt had come loose so when I took the corner the tyres were covered in oil and the bike came out from under me).Weather damage from an estimated 10 years of backyard storage ,mainly surface rust on spokes and crash bars ,handle bars, mirrors etc.The main issue ,or hopefully non-issue is that an auntie of mine threw out my engine covers so the engine has been exposed for this period of time so I'm hoping the guts don't have any residue or rust build up which could cause internal damage.Being uneducated in metals I have assumed that the engine is an alloy so internals would be resiliant to any serious ware and tear.
If there is anyone about to begin a build also on this or a similar model(GS 400 1981) I'd appreciate any advice or maybe we can try committ to a scheduled time frame.Alternatively I will look in the archives for any past rebuilds or if anyone knows any off hand could they go to the trouble of sending me the info.
Currently living in Sydney Australia got two sons one going to high school next year so I estimate I have about 3 years of build time which should be just about enough time for me to get started ,also have a Honda CB 400 '81 but that is just in need of a service . Gs400 is the bike I wanna see on the road though.
Thankyou in advance for any help or advice this forums community can offer me.

Hey mate, go to page 1 of my build thread in my signature and start reading

Before I did this, the most I'd done mechanically was get the mixture screw adjusted ok, gap/replace spark plugs, bled the front brake, and did an oil change.

So if I can go from that to having her just about ready for the road after a frame up rebuild, you should be just fine

Some tips for dismantling... bag and tag *everything* no matter how obvious you think it will be where it belongs. You will forget or get confused.

Make sure you get an impact driver for those old bolts and screws that won't come out.

When taking the engine out, either get someone to give you a hand like I did, otherwise lay the bike on its right side and lift the frame off the engine.

Keep us up to date and start posting some pic's too

Yup as Pete said, just have a look at some of the build threads already in progress or ones that have been completed

Lots of good info, and tips and pics and well you name it, most of them have it.

I just started a rebuild, I am taking lots of pictures, and posting a lot of them, not as many as I have taken, but some of the more relevant ones are here in my thread.

Follow along with any of them and you will be just fine, you can always ask for help, read the manual, I took the plunge, just because I found this place and the posts already made, otherwise my bike would have probably been sold.....

      Cheers

          this forum is "the ****"

Appreciate the quick response and great advice as always. The problem is you bastards might have just convinced my dumb ass to have a go at it.So if the 1981 GS400 is a protected species you guys may have pushed it 1 step closer to extinction.Hope you are all proud of yourselves ,then again if I manage to pull this off you come out looking like a pack of geniuses but don't hold your breath on the last point.I'd say the best idea in order for you all to save face is to come past my place and do the rebuild quick smart and then I can claim it as mine and guess what ,that's right you all look like geniuses once again but hey I'd hate to influence you into doing something that you don't want to afterall it's your reputations not mine that are resting on you advising me to do the build myself ,and we all know how important reputation is to a healthy mind body and soul so I'll leave it up to you guys to decide .
P.S my garage is free most weekends and Monday through Friday ,also I like to have a nap around 1pm till 3pm so you may have to keep the noise down during these hours.
          See yas soon.
