Riding home from the office this afternoon I almost got caught in a strong thunder storm. Just as the first HUGE rain drops started to fall my bike suddenly sounded rather "sporty." I was in traffic and a mile from home so I thought to myself, "I think the baffle just blew out." I pulled into the garage just before the bottom fell out. Lightening, torrential rain, wind, etc.

I looked down to check the baffle and was baffled. Where's my tail pipe!?!?!

Jumped in the truck, drove back out on to the bypass and saw the slip on sitting on the center line. I shot a u-turn and pulled into the emergency lane with my hazzard lights on. There was a line of traffic coming so I didn't chance running into the road in the middle of the downpour. I watched the first truck in the line of traffic close in and "PANG", ran over my pipe. It shot into median where I retrieved it after traffic cleared. The collector end was flattened.

Ahhhhh that will buff right out......LOL

Sorry to hear about your mishap there GT.....hopefully you can make it useable and presentable, or you just might have to bite the bullet and get another....

I was out the other day for about 2 hours, came in parked the bike, gave it a quick once over, and I see that I have lost a M8 X 25 bolt, one that holds one of the rear engine mounts so I have to get another, and I am going to pull the others out and put a dab of locktite on each and every one....hopefully no more lost bolts.

Shh ouch....I'm just fitting a 4-1 that is designed for a GS1000 on to my bike, so it will only have one bolt rather than 2 holding it to the rear peg hanger.... I will be sure to use threadlock (or a welder) after seeing that... unlucky!!

Bugger GT! That looks like it survived without too much damage though so should be salveagable if you don't mind a few scuff marks...

            Thanks Fellas! Misery loves company.

I bit the bullet and ordered a new V&H header and slip-on to replace this system. It's the same Vance and Hines 4 into 1 megaphone. I was going to have the old one ceramic coated anyway because it was really blued and needed some attention. This is just another way to do it. I also have the carbs tuned for this pipe and want to go with the same thing.

It will look really good and still run really good after I get it on. And believe me, it will be on for good!

I'm just really glad I hadn't put the money into coating only to have it fall off on the road.

I'm still laughing a little bit about how that must have looked to the other cars in traffic.

            Live and learn!!!

I'll put pictures up of the new system when I get it on. In the mean time I'm still riding it to work. It sounds mean.

I'd have to have a magic buffer to fix that one!

I think I'll check my motor mounts!!

Gotta say, I really like the sound of the open header.

BUT, I had a heavy riding day on Wednesday. The result was a lot of "HUH?", "What?".

I think I lost a couple of fillings as well.

                    Shiny Pipes!

Well, she looks so much better with the new V&H exhaust. I'm glad to get rid of "Ol' Blue". See previous pictures of the bike to see what I mean! It's the same pipe and header as before, but it's much quieter. I'm very pleased with how it looks. Once I get some new paint and the badges back on, she will be one sweet ride.

                            Thanks guys.

I think I'll hang the old slip on up in my garage as a conversation piece. Wondering what I should do with the old header.

Impeccable looking 850 mate, love that its started out as a cheap project and turned into a more or less complete resto.

If I were you I'd polish the headers and list them for sale, either here or eBay. Someone will want them most likely.

                              Cheers - boingk.
