I didn't have to modify the chain guard mount in any way to get my 530 chain installed.
That is why I am questioning HOW you installed the chain.

OK I will look at it again when I get back from work this Sunday, perhaps I put the spacer on the wrong side of the front sprocket.

Spacer goes to the outside.Seems counter intuitive but there it is.Doing the same conversion on my 78.Nice job so far.

How rare are the 80 E's......I did not know this.
Very rare, as I found out taking two years to find a decent gas tank for mine. There were 1000Gs out in 1980 for the cruiser set, and the new 1100E was there as well for the hot rodeos, so very few people bought the 1000E. The next year there were none.

Nice to see another E getting restored and back on the road. If you fit the carb vent tubes, make sure that they are not too long and that they end up pointing to the rear under the back of the tank. If the ends of them are allowed to drop down to the carb float level they can start to siphon the gas out of the carbs.

Yep it's official, I am a moron. I should have looked closer i.e. read the instructions, that came with the 530 conversion and the spacer does go on the outside. I will have to change that when I get home. Recent developments on the Title for the bike. When I got this bike it did not have a title. It turns out from talking with the guy I got it from, he put a lot of thought into purchasing this bike when he purchased it. In his words, "In 1980 this bike was the one to have and it took me 2 months to find one". He purchased the bike brand new and rode it off the showroom floor. Unfortunately for me he lost the title in a mountain of papers at his parents house and was not able to find it. This next part might help out others in WI with the same problem. He filled out a bill of sale and a history of how he got the bike. I also filled out a history and had the police out to my shop to run the vin and fill out the form from the state. I had to take pictures of the bike from both sides and fill out a title registrations form. I sent it in and just yesterday I got a call from a lady at the DMV and she is approving issuing me a new title and plates for the bike. All I had to do was pay $4.12 for the tax on the purchase price of $40 and I am the proud owner of a titled 1980 GS1000 E. Issuing a new title is up to the discretion of the person in the DMV and they may require you to bond the title. I hope this info helps others in my situation.

Are you sure that you didn't pay too much for it?

I might have paid too much. I figured it out yesterday and I am now $762 in to this project with all the new parts and getting it painted and the title hassle. But who's counting.

I just got my tank and side covers back from the painter and I must say they look fantastic. I went with the 2 stage base/clear since I plan on keeping this bike for a long time. I took one of my side covers to my local PPG paint distributor and they were able to color match it to a 6. I guess anything under a 10 is almost a perfect match. I must say I think this is one attractive color. I did decide to go with a Pingle pet cock and I think it's very high quality and quite attractive. I did have to buy an adapter plate but I wont have any leaky pet cock issues and it's only 10 bucks for a rebuild kit. So hopefully this week will see the bike back on the road. The only thing I am waiting for is my new badges for the side covers.

Why did you remove the tank emblems? I think since you are going to all the trouble, make it as stock as possible... You can get the decals from Reproduction Decals
