    82 GS750 Cafe - Lots of work!

    New to the forum, wanting to share a bit of a project that I am starting this spring.

    Picked up an '82 GS750 that had been abused. It ran, but dumepd gas on the ground. After I got it two years ago, I had no time for it other than the occasional start.

    Well, it's time to fix all of that.

    I'm not good with carburetors, so I might have to outsource that. But otherwise, I will be doing everything myself.

    To do: Rust Removal, everywhere. Lots of cleaning and degreasing. Clean carbs. Make new seat. Switch to 4-1 exhaust. Handlebar. New headlight setup. Oh and of course painting (maybe powdercoating)

    The Carbs are in bad shape

    I pulled the airbox, carbs, seat and tank off and just started cleaning.

    The airbox won't be put back into use, so that's available if anyone is in want.

    The carbs were just grimey and full of of rust, dust and everything they shouldn't have.

    I took the bowls off and..... well you can guess what they looked like by judging the outside.

      Welcome to the forum, we need more local GS members in Denver. First thing, find out what bike that is.

      It is most definitely NOT a 1982 GS 750. Looks like a 1979 GS 750L.

      I would be happy to assist you with your carburetors.

        Tank

        The tank had a lot of rust on the outside and the inside was horrible. I was going to just get a new tank all together, but ended up giving it a good shot. I used The Works treatment on the inside, it turned out great in almost no time. Total cost $1 from Dollar Tree.

        The first picture shows where I had hit the majority of the rust off using a Dragon Scale sand pad. The later, I ended up using my handheld grinder with a wire stripper wheel on it. Took about 15 minutes to get all of the paint off.

        Planning on either doing it at home or taking it to a friend who powdercoats for about $50.

        The real work is done with getting the rust out of this thing. The hardest part now is getting the carbs in order. Anyone have a good mechanic for this in the Denver Metro area? My carb knowledge is limited.

          It is a GS750L. It was a few years ago that it started sitting in my things I need done now list, but I'd be money on it being an 82 or 81 off hand. I'll check the title in the morning.

            I'll take that bet, and the title may be wrong. Look on the VIN sticker on the steering head. !980 and later 750s had the 16 valve head, with rectangular cam end covers, and no kickstarter. Yours are round, the engine is a 1979 or earlier. Someone could have swapped the earlier engine into a later frame, which would be good as it's a better engine.

              I'll check that out. Thanks for the tip.

              I'd love the help with the carbs. I'm not thick headed, but have near minimal carb experience! I feel like those are the biggest part of the bike that I need to get together. It needs a new battery, but that's simple enough. Are you ever in Denver? What all would I need to have on hand?

                Honestly, I might have my foot in my mouth. We picked up an 82 Sportster last year and I might be swapping the years out in my mind. I might owe you a cold beer.

                  I live in Littleton, just bring the carbs over, and some time.
                  I have everything else.

                    Clean the carbs yourself it's easy, cheaper and you will end up with a better job.
                    Go to Cliff's site it has many great tutorials including one on cleaning/rebuilding the carbs.

                      I say take em to TKent some one needs to make him do something useful anyway, besides all he does is sit around and bitch about "L" models.
