Someone went through a great deal of trouble and expense to paint that bike that awful color. A nice shiny black frame is always nice.
If that is indeed a '78 GS1000E, here's a pic of what they originally looked like. My ole stock "skunk" back in the day. European versions had a different paint job though.

I was trying to bite my tongue and behave.
      Glad that someone said something.
It reminds me of that hideous Kawasaki green frame on the one that is now in Norway.
And just how butt ugly can someone make those rims look?

          That looks great.
I do want to go down the resto mod route, so I will stick to standard paint schemes.
Just keep the seat I already have and fit a Harris 4into1 pipe, these were common mods back in the 80's in England.
I was too young at the time so its my turn to re-live it YAY

            Cheers Karl, Im in Birmingham.
Anytime your down this way get in touch.

Eric, I hate the red, but its the most complete bike I could find over here.

I promise it will be looking much better soon.

I am stripping it down, and have been working on it today, should have the engine out tomorrow if I can shift the damaged bolt holding the sprocket cover so I can remove the chain.

            Here are some more photos from today;

Your just a paint job away from it looking something like this. Believe this to be a '79.

I do believe this is what they looked like when they came out in your neck of the woods, also notice the strap on the seat which we didn't get in the states. There is also a stripe on the top of the tank.

You can see that stripe on this web-site.

your doing much the same as me, mine is a 79 (choke is through the triple tree). It sat for 17 years with out turning over. I have spent time getting the carbs sorted and it now runs well on all cylinders so I know the engine is good. Here are a couple of photos that should make you feel your further on than me...lol

                    before it was running

and outside the garage for a quick wash after all the oil leaks were fixed

Like you I have gone the Harris route too, new down pipes on for its test run...
will be watching your progress with interest, your in the right place for any help you need, been great for all my questions...my back is shot at the moment so your project will go very much faster than mine.....

this was ebay the other day, the photo shows thepaint on the top of the tank but don't think this was off a GS1000E

                      Went for £95 BTW

I did see that tank and it looked nice, but they always do on the outside.
It didnt have the side indents on like mine which I want to preserve.
I have stripped my tank down, removed the badges and sender unit.
This will be fully restored im hoping.

                          Your bike is looking great.
Thanks for the comments, I am doing what I can the only thing slowing me down is money.
Modern times, England is a hell of a expensive place to live........

Should I stick with the seat I have or go for a original type?
I quite like the aftermarket seat..

That's the european paint style scheme, but not a GS1000E tank, more like a GS850.
