I can tell from the pic's you got a "quality" bike. Even though I don't like the color of the frame I can tell it was a good paint job non-the-less.
You have the benefit of time on your side, you don't have to pick and choose all in one day for a color scheme, in fact you may want to stop with the frame and wheels.
You can go to "Google" and put variations of GS1000, like '78 GS1000, or Suzuki GS1000E and then after the search click on images, and you'll see all kinds of GS1000's in all sorts of years and colors, you might even see yours.
      Check it out! Enjoy!

I want to have the frame painted black and do the bike in the Skunk colours.

          HELP REQUIRED.....
Have removed all engine mounts, carbs and air box.
But cannot get the engine out of the cradle, as if there is not enough room.

Is there a way around this, or do you have to dismantle the engine before removal?

          Any help appreciatted.

          Thanks

They CAN look good with a red frame/rims.
Black body parts with red stripes perhaps?

usually to get the block out you have to take off the valve cover. When ever I've done them I tip the bike on it's side to get it out, pretty heavy. You don't need to crack open the top end to get it out. You've got all the engine mount shafts out? fronts and backs? as well as the mounts on the bottom of the block to the frame?

Yes got all engine mounts removed, and bolts removed.
The engine is moving around in the frame.

I did lay it down on the right side, but could not manage to shift it out of the frame.

So have left it for the day.

Very annoyed as I wanted to get that one step further.

When its on its side roll the frame counter clockwise and back. the back bottom of the motor needs to clear the mount tabs and the side needs to clear the welded on tab on the left side of the frame. it helps to put a block of wood under the cylinders and the clutch case so it holds everything off the ground a bit.

                    DAY 5.
                    Progress this evening.

With the help of a good friend, I took the breather off the rocker cover.

Put the bike on the mainstand and we took the engine out the right hand side of the frame with ease.

The engine is now rested and we decided as we made fast progress that we would take the front end off too.

                    Here are tonights photos;

So now I will continue the strip down and hopefully update soon. Im happy ;D

I'm guessing that seat to be Guiliari. Hard to find around here. I have one for my 82 Katana but I don't really like it.

And to echo what 7981GS said, they can look good with red frame/wheels.
                      To wit:

What's really funny to me is that I prefer this seat to my much better looking but less comfortable Guiliari.....

Great job getting the engine out!
Now, either paint the frame a much darker (the fast color) red or black which ever you choose.
It is your bike, do with it what you may, I am only offering a suggestion.

                          Nice katana.
But I'm still going with the black frame as I have taken it too far not too now.

Will keep the updates coming when money lets me do something new.

I have to vote for black, a highly gloss black, a semi gloss will show less dirt, but I'm old fashioned, and the stockers were gloss black, so I'd have to go that route, a gloss black will make it look newer I would think.
But how are you going to get it back together without scratching it?

Looking good...I will be removing the engine from mine soon too so the pics are very useful....when you say right side of the frame is that looking from the front...i.e. the clutch lever side?...my plan is to use 2 of us and 2 pieces of stock through the engine mounts.

We had the bike on the main stand.
Taking the engine out of the right hand side of the frame as if your sitting on the bike (distributor side), as the left side has a welded bottom bracket restricting movement.

You dont need to use bars, just two people, one each side keep the engine level, lift just enough for the sump to clear the bottom of the frame and carry the engine out of the right hand side.

Its a bit of a heavy lump, just be careful to put it on something which wont damage the engine cases.
