    WTG Trevor!
Just make sure that you use the K & N filter oil (or equivalent) on those filters.

Ah thanks for the tip Eric. I didn't even know I had to oil them.

Treat them just like new K & N's and then let them sit over-night.
        Turn them in the morning.
On the chrome at night and on the rubber in the morning.
Wipe any excess off after a few hours.
(Inside the cap and around the seal.)
If you did it correctly, there will be no excess oil to be found.

Sweet! Thanks Eric... I have the K&N kit from my 750, so I'm set to go.
          Thanks again,

My understanding is those Emgo filters are paper, not gauze like K&N's. They are not supposed to be oiled according to numerous threads in the archives here.

Also, those carb top caps are made of steel and will rust now that all the plating has been removed. Some clear coat is advised to keep away rust since they are now raw steel.

Thanks Ed you are right. I will clear coat the tops too.

My understanding, based on fact and not hearsay, is that these have been on this bike for over 6 years and were oiled once.
The caps have never been polished, waxed or clear-coated or even wiped with a cloth and this bike has been regularly ridden in snow and salted roads.
As you can clearly see by this close-up, they most certainly ARE NOT made from paper.
Just my personal EXPERIENCE and nothing that I have been told or read.
If you believe what you are told and read, good for you.

Just so we can put this discussion of to oil or not to oil, I emailed EMGO directly and they said "No sir, if you oil them they are junk. The filter media is paper. Do not oil." Right from the horses mouth. I'm surprised they don't put those instructions in the box but then again it doesn't say to oil either. Eric Ed was referring to Trevor's carb caps not the EMGO caps when he said to clear coat them to avoid rust. I told Trevor once he buffs them he's going to lose his protection but ohhhh noooo, he just couldn't resist! heck he's probably grabbed every aluminum/steel item he can find and polished it till it glows Again Trevor, the bike is looking great.

Do the EMGO filters in my picture look like they have paper media to you?

Honestly, I can't tell what they look like from that picture and I've never looked at EMGO filters up close.

Personally, I'm going to trust EMGO on this one, Eric.

                          Hey Eric,

I agree that your filters don't look like paper, but I had a thought. Keep in mind that I have ZERO experience with pods.

7 years is a long time in the business world, and a whole lot of money has disappeared due to cost overruns, tax increases, and global economic declines. This may have prompted EMGO to make some changes to their product.

I don't know the answer, but EMGO may have started off with a gauze, and moved to paper to cut costs. I've seen a lot of material come through my lab that I wouldn't have classified as "paper", composed of cellulose fibre, and doing a really good job of mimicking other materials.

In Trevor's case, I'd think the question as "to oil or not to oil" could be answered by a worst case scenario. What is the biggest danger in oiling (counter to EMGOs recommended use) when it is not called for? What is the biggest danger in not oiling if it IS necessary?

Went away for the long weekend so not much got done until I got home today. The wheels have been bugging me as I have cleaned them a a couple of times but today I went at them with some simple green and then some metal polish. Slowly but surely...
