1982 GS300 Project - Where do I start

Still no parts but got some stuff accomplished:










Any one have any suggestions for getting some minor scuffs and scratches out of the chrome on the mufflers?

you had tan wrap for the pipes, and then you used the black silicone paint, how come ? you should have purchased the black wrap...

Um well I got the just plain because it was cheaper and from what I read I had to do the silicone spray junk anyways so I figured save a couple bucks for the same result. I guess it seals the wrap, or so they say.

Well I've tried various grits of steel wool and haven't really gotten any worth while results.

What I'm really trying to get out is the acid burn from where whoever scrapped the bike I got my muffler from. Must have taken the old battery out and spilled it on the chrome.

That is the only thing I can figure it is.

I'm currently in the process of using 1500 sand paper to gently work out some of it. It just looks like splattered discoloration.

Hopefully it cures well and I did enough prep work. Otherwise its going to crack bubble and chip like a bi@tch.

So here is what I tried to get some of that acid splatter off.

First I started out with 150, yes 150 grit on the chrome. Took a lot of pain-staking gumption to give it that first swipe.

Then moved up to 500, 800, 1500, 3000 and then polished with Mags or something. I'll check but its just a generic polish. I just happened to have a headlight restoration kit that had those grits in it.

I only did one side to see how it would turned out and I was sweating my @$$ off.

Well we got some pipes on her now!

Got a few scratches during the install which was quite exhausting. God I've been wanting to use that pun all night!

I couldn't take any pictures because its too dark.

Went for a quick run around the block. The wrap starting to bake and smelled like death wrapped in sewage. A little smoking but I knew that was coming.

Will take her out first thing in the morning to give the exhaust a proper curing.

Is there anything I can run with the gas to clean out any gunk that may have built up while it sat? Like the carb cleaner for cars or injector cleaner?

It seems as though one of the float valves was stuck because it caused one of the carbs to overfill as soon as I filled it. I wiped it up really quickly and then put a fan over it before I started it.

Started right up! ROARED to life. I think my static timing was a bit closer to right this time.

Doesn't seem to be overfilling either carb now but I'd still like to run something through if possible.

Good to hear man. Don't worry about the scratches you will get plenty of those on the road from rocks and road debris. Did you set the float height when you dug into those carbs?
