I finally had the time to change the oil yesterday and replace the stator cover, and wouldn't you know one of the oil filter studs stripped. The 6 o'clock stud. I knew it was bad but didn't think it would go yet. Those factory studs are crap. So, next week I get to take the exhaust back off to get some room in there and "hopefully" get that stud out with vice grips. The stator cover can wait until I resolve this stud issue. If it comes out easy enough I'll do another one thats on its way to stripping as well. First I'll search these forms and see if others have any tips on 1150 oil filter stud removal.

If you have any good threads on the inside double up two thin nuts and remove it that way.
Can you rethread it to standard? You can do this without removing it.
OR a vice grip and tear that sh!t up!

Thanks chef, I read about using the two nuts in a tech thread and will probably try that first, there seems to be plenty of threads left after the stripped area . I also went through my dies right after it stripped but hell it's already only 6mm, can't really go much smaller and still have it be useful. I'm hoping I can get it out and replace with stainless studs.

Well I got the 6 o'clock oil stud out without any issues. I have a stud remover tool but it's for car cylinder heads and water pump studs and such. This little 6mm stud is to small for it. So I put one of my vice grips on it and came right out. I'm going to remove the 4 o'clock stud as well as it's on its way too.
I went to 4 hardware stores and a few auto parts stores but nobody has this size stud, it's 6mm by 38-40mm and nobody had one that length so I ordered some from the Bandit, they should be in next week. I wish I googled the part number first, I usually do but I was ****ed I couldn't find a stud at the stores so I just went to Bandit when I got home and ordered them. The next day I did google it (01421-06257) and found it at Boats.net and powersportsplus.com. and a couple of other places. 50 cents cheaper per stud and the shipping was only 1.75 compared to 6.75 at Bandit. Not a lot of money but still, I hate that over the top $$ shipping charge !

Since the bikes not going anywhere until the studs come in I went ahead and popped the stator cover off to replace the cover with another one I have that is not as scratched and gouged up as this one is from the accident. It came off easily, once I got it pulled back a 1/4 inch or so I just needed a stiff putty knife to help push it out past the magnetic hold and the starter gear sleeve. Now that I have it off I'm thinking of replacing the stator. It's doesn't look bad and it's not giving me any trouble, but since I have it off...... I don't know, it's 100.00 plus for a new one. I'm thinking about it, not sure yet.

It doesn't look bad , does it ????

You guys are right, the stator looks alright, it looked better after I got it out of the old cover so I could see it up close. I was only thinking like, ' it's 27 years old, not a lot of miles on it but it is electrical and while I have the cover off ...... ' . But it was working so...it's going back in, and it's not a big deal to change it anyway if it does go bad.

All clean and back in the new/old cover. Thank God for impact drivers, or those screws would never come out. A little loctite red on all of them.

The new/old cover it hardly perfect but it's a hell of a lot better than the one from the crash.

So I have it all set up to go back on, a little gasket sealant where the upper and lower cases meet, gasket on, wires through the case, hold it over the magnets and whoosh it pulls it right on nicely. A couple of taps with the rubber mallet and I'm ready for the screws. They all snugged down nice, except for one ! SOB ! lol. Second to last one I snugged down too. I went and searched for my helicoil kit, which I haven't used in years and found I only have 1 6mm insert left. So the cover will come back off this week and I'll pick up some more inserts and coil that one bolt hole. Ordered another gasket too, just in case, there cheap. Oh well, chit happens.

Hey my man! I know the crash sucked, but I love this story and build thread! You are doing an awesome job and I know putting in a TON of manhours on this bike......totally worth it.
This is a and is going to be a very very nice 1150 for sure.
How they came up with such a great design/looking bike so long ago when just a few years earlier, there were so many typical UJM street bikes, and then in 1980 they built the first 16v 1100e, then the great great 82-83 1100E design, then your bikes style/design....I know the other big UJM companies had some modern designs developing also at the same time, but Suzuki IMO did it the best.
I cant wait till you have that experience where at a bike night or something everybody is lookin at your old bike instead of some overblinged 30K Harley or insane modern rocket!
I have no idea why I am rambling on.....
You did see that 1150 in the parts for sale section right?.....you are a pro now, you could completely rebuild that other one in a weekend
                        Great build!

oh, ps, those front wheel parts are crazy smashed up! holy smokes.

Thanks Loud, it has been a pleasure bringing the ol ride back to life.

Well I put the new oil filter stud in, no issues, and installed the filter and cap. Drilled, tapped and inserted a helicoil in the stripped stator bolt hole. Now I'm just waiting (a bit impatiently, tapping fingers on desk) for the new stator cover gasket to arrive. The tracking number has been saying all along today was the delivery date. Now this morning it says tomorrow as the delivery date. It arrived at my local PO this morning after they went out for their delivery rounds. So I called the PO and asked if I could come down and pick it up. I got somebody on the phone who barley speaks English, all she kept saying was no,no,no,no..... Unreal, no wonder their $ 5 billion in the hole. I'll go down myself and speak to the postmaster later, see if I can't ransom the damn envelope out of there. Normally I wouldn't mind waiting but I want to get her running today, I'm off tomorrow also and wanted to head up into lower New York state to take her for a spin on some nice mountain roads. Can a non postal employee go postal in a post office ?
