1981 GS850GL wont start-just point me in the righ direction please :-)

Hi everyone, I picked up 1981 GS850GL with 22000 miles as a project bike.
    Its in rather good shape.
THE GOOD: all electric seems to work good, all lights, turn signals, horn are working, dash lights up. Turns over without a problem.
It needs a good cleaning, looks like it was garaged, oryginal paint, chrome is little rusty.....
Brakes work but I will flush the system, change the pads...
Compresion is 120 on all 4 cylinders.
THE BAD: It wont start :-(
There is spark on all cylinders, checked the wires-they are in right order.
CARB- cleaned the carb(not the proper way, just took it apart and cleaned whatever I can get to). Spraying ether does not help to even get it going for few seconds........
After many tries and recharching the battery I noticed gas in the engine oil(that I just changed :-0...).
I used "search" button as much as I could but its just gettining to the point that Im not sure what to do next. I want to rebuild the carb and clean it "properly"....
Just wanted to get it to start before I start spending $ on it, like tires, brakes, new cables... and whatever it needs.

Can someone please point me in the right direction of what to do next?

btw Im super excited to bring it back to life and enjoy it on the road, it such a cool looking bike with so much character :-)

You need to do a proper carb cleaning so if you've really been reading here you know about Basscliff's site. Go to http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff and check out Nessism's carb rebuild thread. Plus, look over the "Read Me" section and search out the Top Ten Newbie Mistakes thread.

I don't know Extreme. Sounds like a total loss to me. I'll take it off your hands.

If not then replace the petcock and clean the carbs. Should be golden after that. Might want to check the stator while you're at it.

Thanks, I assumed that the petcock worked properly because when I turned it to PRI the gas would start pouring. It would actually overflow my garbs and leak in to the airbox.....
Thanks for the tip, I just tested it and it would not work in vaccum mode! After a good clean up. it seems to work fine.
Unfortunatelly that didnt fix my issue, bike still wont start. CARB cleaning will be my next step.

That's how the PRI setting is supposed to work...
