A very light coat left behind is fine. If you start seeing it collect high on the tubes as the forks do their job when riding then it's excessive.

it all depends on how you want things to look in the end....polished, painted, etc....

sorry I added more to my previous post, ......
fill them in with some metal epoxy, like JB Weld or similar, and paint them black....
it all depends on how you want things to look in the end....polished, painted, etc....
