I'll try that tonight. At least I know it is not from the sprocket - the chain isn't on yet.

Really frustrating, but I should probably look at it as a learning curve...

Well... it could still be the clutch pushrod seal... that's a known good one for leaking...

But yeah do that and see how you go. Hopefully it'll show something nice and simple...

Good luck, that is frustrating, but at least it is likely to be arelatively minor problem

          I really hope so JvZ!

I am desperate to ride it before winter hits our shores...

Took the motor out on Thursday. Seem 2 of the front bolts of the sump did in fact snap.

Somi asked my neighbour to rethread the holes and insert new bolts - then I will know it will be perfect.

Got my motor back today. 2 front sump bolts were snapped off. These were replaced and threads repaired as well as 3 bolts and threads on the cam cover.

I will have to give the motor a quick once over with another coat of paint and then back in the frame and off to electrical work next week!

I think I have a problem...I just realised this morning (while flipping through the manual to see where the main fuse is located) that I am missing the ignitor box for my bike.

I don't recall seeing one, which means I will have to try and track down a secondhand one...

Glad you found the sump problem Wally! The ignitor is the expensive/difficult bit...

You can get a Dynatek DS3-3C setup (Including coils) but that's not cheap.

You can source a later model '83 and onwards ignitor and signal generator and rotor and retrofit them, which will remove the mechanical advance.

Also the 500's ignition setup should work as well.

Those three options are probably preferable to paying too much for another old ignitor that will likely fail soon...

I really hope I can find a decent second hand one.

If I can't find one, then I am afraid the bike will have to wait for a few months.

PS; do they need tons of airflow like the R/R or can it be mounted beneath my seat?

I'd suggest keep an eye out for a newer 450 or 500 setup, it will be easier to find parts for later too... you *might* be able to pick the whole setup up for a good price as they're potentially less in demand than the rarer 450 ignitor...

Airflow shouldn't be an issue as they shouldn't get hot like the R/R, I think the issue is more over voltage due to our dodgy charging systems.

Thanx Pete, I would need a step-by-step please of what is needed (if i get from newer bikes) and the process of replacing it.

If you could help, it would be awesome. Tried the best salvage shop already and the guy pretty much told me they are not to be found anywhere...

A replacement aftermarket one is about US$200, plus I still have to get all the wiring done by an electrical guy...

This is really frustrating - so close, yet so far...

Hmmmm to put a later 450 or a 500 one on you would need ignition pickup/rotor and possibly the bolt as well as the signal generator and ignitor unit (built in electronic advance).

You *may* need the coils although I expect the 450 ones will be fine.

Check in on Mekanix's 500 thread as he has one you can compare with also.

Dynatek DS3-3C is a bolt in replacement, but it comes with its own coils and you will need to tell them you need the spacer for the 450 or the rotor will flop about on the rotor bolt.

                            Thanx Pete!

I found this 2nd hand one online incl a starter motor for very cheap.

Anybody know if this is the correct one? Before I buy it.
Worth a shot in trying. Supposedly came off a running 450.

If all else fails, I'll have to save up for a Dynotek set (and so will my brother-in-law, as his one is also missing... )

That looks completely different to the stock 80 - 82 ignitor Wally, but they all have part numbers on them... what's the part number off that one? A reverse lookup on Alpha Sports will tell you what it's from...

Mmmmm...might be off a later model then. Guy said he wasn't too sure.

Bummer, looks like the bike will only be ready after the winter...
