Weird... oh well let's hope it's nothing to worry about and she's all good

How did you get the sprocket to stop turning while torquing up the nut? I always have difficulty and get a mate to stand on the back brake while the chain's on to tighten it up.

Well, I stuck it in gear and came undone without hassles.

So I assume it wasn't done up properly previously.

It is on for now, but will be double-checked once the motor, etc is installed.

Cool, I wondered if you had any secret methods up your sleeve... I guess not... haha

Just make sure you get it torqued up nice and tight, I think I ended up around 40 lb-ft or whatever it's called... any less and I found it loosened up with use.

When I first got my 450 the nut was only held on by the lock washer and the splines on the inside of the sprocket were nearly destroyed. Fortunately the splines on the drive shaft are ok.

Rebuild the cam tensioner (thanks to Bwringer's tutorial).

Quick coat of paint and will get another one when motor gets painted.

Took valve cover and all looks OK...

...except for the circled bolts, which are loose and incorrect, based on other bolts.

And a good reason not to use silicone gasket makers:

          Valve checks tomorrow!

            Is that installed properly?

It has been a long time since I worked on a 450, but all the other GSes I have worked on have had the large knob facing the other side.

Thanx Steve, it is wrong way around! Previous guys put it in wrong way around - hopefully no damage done...

Well, you know how different the twins can be sometimes.

                    So similar, yet so different.

Cam tensioner installed correct way around

Checked valve clearances. Both intakes are at about 0,10mm and exhausts at 0,03mm.

Do I need to remove the current shims to determine what I should get?
(It is a first for me, so please be gentle in the explanation/bashing. ).

Well, then, let's just put it this way ... if you don't know what you have, how will you know what to get?

Remove a shim, look at its size. The size should be printed on the side that is toward the bucket. If you can not read the size, you will have to measure it. Record that number in your spreadsheet (I know you have one ), it will then tell you what size you need. PUT THAT SHIM BACK IN, then move to the next valve. Continue until all are done.

If it were my bike, I would leave the intakes at 0,10 mm and drop the exhaust shims one size to get them closer to 0,08 mm.

Awesome, thanx Steve! It's my first attempt at this, so I am a bit nervous at stuffing it up...

Hahaha look out Wally, Steve will have you buffing everything if you're not careful! He trips over his polishing wheels quite regularly... at least I think that's how it goes Steve?

That is very cool, but waaaaayyyy too much effort to keep clean.

Polished my Bandit's wheels a few years back and after that decided never again!
