    1978 GS750 problem - A deal breaker?

    Hey everyone,

    I've formally introduced myself but don't post much. I'm breaking down this GS750 I got from a friend. Well, today I took the clutch cover, etc. off to clean up the sprocket, etc. and I found this...



    As you can see, below the start motor there are some specs of bright red. That's where there was a thick bead of red, rubbery sealant of some kind. When I pealed back the failing sealant, I found what looks to be a small crack in the case. Any idea what would have caused this, if it's repairable, if it's worth repairing? Up until this point I was reasonably satisfied with the condition of the bike, and confident that I could fix it... Now I'm not so sure.

    Spin the clutch pushrod and see if it is true..but it looks to me that at some point it threw the chain and smacked the cases. And that red is RTV which means that engine has been split at one time too. Not necessarily a deal breaker, but in an ideal world something like Three Bond 1207 B should have been used.

    CRACK in the case...will probably need tig welded to seal it. If its easily accessable that can be done from the outside and smoothed off with a file or some gentle grinding with the dremel stones.

    I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

      Also was thinking...can you detect any greyish filler squishing out of that crack? May take a look with a magnify glass. That would indicate that it was split and patched on the inside with JB Weld. Not the brightest thing to do..in my opinion.

        Or maybe they just slathered the red RTV all over it to slow the leak just enough to sell the bike.

        I think I'd reslather it and start looking for a 750 engine.

          Actually I already have an engine lined up, the guy is asking $300 OBO. Considering one of the cover brackets was also busted off a new engine isn't a bad idea. Apparently the current one was boared out to 830CC so I'm not sure how new components would jive with those; never rebuilt an engine and certainly haven't had a boared bike. I'm kinda worried about spending money on an engine and still having trouble getting the thing running right.

            where abouts are you? I've got a spare 750 and 850 engine.

              Use the 830 kit on the replacement motor. Many times the chains get neglected and that is what happens when they break..
