I totally missed that. I realized they were way too big when I started taking off the float bowls. No worries though. I can get ss bolts for the tops and float bowls at Ace hardware up the road a few blocks. Won't need the ones I ordered, the T doesn't need them.

"8 bolts is correct if its for your intake boots....I see you got the kit from cycleorings, and those would be only bolts he sells with his kit..."

The two inside carbs are way dirtier than the outside carbs with the smaller jets. I'm starting to think this rack was probably rebuilt by the PO. Two of the float bowls are polished, one of the top covers looks to have a different finish as well. The plugs have already been removed as well.
I took the rack outside to hit it with some pb spray. None of the rack screws would budge, and there is one top cover screw that it being stubborn.

Quick update
I finally got some parts in that I had been waiting on for almost a month for the swing arm and shocks. I also got my bolt order in from McMaster-Carr. Way cheaper than Ace hardware! And the shipping was not too bad at under 5 bucks. So now I am just waiting on the float bowl gaskets. Having a hard time getting the bolts loose on one of the racks so I am doing everything I can to break them loose without stripping them. Hope to have some more pics up in the next couple of days.

If they are original fasteners, I would suggest JIS bits to remove them, perhaps also an impact driver.
If you are just going to replace them anyway you can slot the heads with a dremel or a hacksaw, then turn the screws out with a flat head/slotted screw driver.

I'm going to have to ask in the carb section about replacing the rest of the jets.

Bought some more parts off of eBay over the last few days. I got a 78 750 gas tank, so no more picks with the peanut tank. I also got a descent looking set of chain adjusters, and I got a good deal on a set of handlebar control boxes. I don't know what direction this bike is going to take. Scrambler...cafe'...stock? I have all the parts to get my swing arm fully functioning. And as soon I figure out what jets I need for my carbs those should be done soon as well. Little progress.

Doesn't quite fit
Not too much is getting done on the bike. I have gotten more parts in. I still need to order new jets for my carbs. I figured out that they are in fact 850 carbs, but for some reason the middle carbs were jetted down to 107.5 instead of 115. So I will be getting the appropriate jets soon. I did get all my stainless bolts in from McMaster Carr and I got my float bowl gaskets from gs suzuki.
I did get the gas tank I bought off of eBay a couple of days ago. I found out a 78 won't fit on an 80 frame though.
I guess they changed the tanks when they added the fuel level sensor.
So I am thinking I will need to get some body shaping dollies and make some space to clear the backbone tubes. The tank is in good shape otherwise. I took the cover off the gas cap because there is no key for it. It will need a paint job, but other than one slight dent in the front it looks pretty good for its age. Minimal rust spots on the inside so I guess it didn't sit for too long not being used.
I need to clean up the swing arm and get all the new hardware put on and change the wheel bearings and the tire, and the rear end will be done.

When I bought the L tank for my bike I had to hammer the tunnel a little wider to fit over the backbone.
I don't have a working sender unit but if I did, it wouldn't fit on my tank/frame combo.

So this Memorial Day I got a little time to work on the T. I have been fitting on some replacement parts. Got a brake hub off eBay and had to take a file to it to get it onto the axle. There was a little burr keeping it from sliding on, but a couple of passes with the file and it was going on nice and smoothly. I should have taken a pic of that.
I got the gas tank mostly on the frame now. I have to figure out a couple of mounting issues though.
Looks good though.
I stole an idea from Duane Ballard and cut up an old skateboard deck I had lying around for a seat pan.
I put on the control boxes I scored for cheap off of eBay. They have some tabs on the inside I think I'll need to file down.
I also finally got the sprocket off too. Took some cleaning, a long time with the heat gun, and some careful use of ice cubes, but it finally came off!
Still working on it this afternoon. I might even get the swing arm cleaned up enough for paint if the wife gives me more time. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well I ran out of daylight but I did work on the swing arm. I broke out the sander and knocked off enough rust and crud that I felt comfortable painting. I didn't do a great job, but it's good enough for right now. In all honesty I will probably need a new swing arm some point in the future, but I feel this one is still road worthy just not that pretty to look at. I used some VHT chassis paint in gloss black. I also picked up some paint for the cases when that time comes as well. Sorry, didn't get any pics before I lost the daylight.
