Try giving a shout to witttom in Ohio http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...?28243-witttom He has a ton of parts so if it's just a stock coil you need he can get it out to you fairly cheap (and fast since you are nearly next door). I have bought from him a time or two and will continue to do so without hesitation. Be forewarned though he is just coming back from a vacation in Deal's Gap (lucky dog lol) so he may be a day or two behind as he catches back up.

Thanks Shadow. I'd rather not buy another 30 year old coil that could just go bad in the near future, i'm just gonna break down and get some of those dyna greens. Will I need a dyna ignition for those coils or could i run the risk of frying my stock ignition with the greens? I'm trying to do this on a budget and I'm already way over from my original plan so if I can go without the ignition that would be best.
Any feedback would be great.Last edited by Guest; 09-18-2014, 11:14 AM.

Then I DOUBLE it. Never fails for me. after the double measure, I usually come in about 5-10% under.

Wiring the Coils on the 81 GS7501L
So i just got the Dyna Greens DC1-1's in the mail today. I have been looking around at the install and i realize that I'm going to have to modify the mount points to get them to fit correctly. What I am not clear on is the wiring. I was reading about the "coil mod" and some relay but It sounds like that is for the pre 1980 bikes? Or will this need to be relayed on mine also??
Another question is I know that the left coils fire 1&4 and the right fire 2&3 but does the orentation of 1&4 / 2&3 matter. like which is which on the individual coils?
Will i have to adjust my timing?
THANKS

It's been a long winter and after frying my RR last fall I had put the bike under the tarp for the winter. finly I got some much needed parts (battery, tappet gauges, shindengen rr) and I'm trying to get this bike to start again. I'm having the same thing as I did last fall when I lost my patiences and fryer my rr with a car battery jump.
ii have new green coils, 8mm wires, new plugs (which all have spark), and a well charged battery. I sent my carbs to chef last summer for a rebuild and they came back with some **** float bowl gaskets on them so I replaced those too. I have fresh (non ethanol) gas hooked up with the "IV" water bottle method. The cranking sounds good but it will not fire. I'm worried that I'm having to much faith in the carb rebuild but I've heard many good things about his work. He asked me to pull the float bowls and make sure they weren't stuck and sure enough they were fine. I also just rechecked my timing for the second time and the valves are within spec.
can anyone give my advice here? This hasn't run since my top end rebuild (rings, seals, hone, gaskets) last summer.
what should I try next?
Sorry for any grammar this is my iPhone.Last edited by Guest; 04-14-2015, 01:20 PM.

When you said that you checked your timing, did you mean your ignition timing or your valve timing? If it was your ignition timing, then I'd check to make sure your cam timing is correct. Have you done a compression check? If not, then do that. It will help to narrow down weather your issues are related to the rebuild or not.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Thanks for the advice. I rechecked my ignition timing and cam timing after reading that, and it was off.
After another read of the manual I adjusted my timing accordingly and set my valve clearances again. Torqued everything down to its spec etc.
After that, another attempt to start it resulted in lots of backfiring. It wouldn't kick over just seemed to want and kick back out of the pipes and some air kick back from the pods (and please don't give me the pod filter speech).
I Know a compression test would do my good but I don't currently have access to one..
It is backfiring out of both exhausts. I have the two wires from one coil going to 1 & 4 and the wires from another coil going to 2 & 3. Should I try switching them?
i did Add a bit of fuel to the plug holes yesterday to try and get it to turn over, maybe this is just burning some fuel left over from that?
ThanksLast edited by Guest; 04-16-2015, 09:25 AM.

Alright so all was good yesterday. Idled really well and revved well, made sure not to rev it high. Put it through a few heat cycles and let it idle without letting it get to hot. Put a fan on it to cool it down between cycles. Took it for a small ride down the street where it bogged under load and limped back to my house not trying to run it hard at all, probably an 1/8th of a mile. Figured it was because the carbs had not been synced and needed some adjustments. Well today I go to start it and it didn't start half as easy as it did yesterday. Once it did it seemed to be burning oil and running rough.. Almost like it was before I rebuilt it. I know I need a compression test but is this something that anyone has experienced before? Didn't seem to be burning any oil yesterday..
besides a a compression test what should I look for next. What are these symptoms telling me?
getting pretty discouraged

Anyone? I'm thinking that its possible maybe some cam journal bolts loosened up or something? Can't get it to start at all now.

Check the plugs to see if they're wet. Maybe flooded. Leaking petcock overnight?http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Well this seems to be going downhill fast... My battery is completely dead and doesn't seem to want and take a charge. Not sure if the ignition was left on overnight or what the deal is but I can't get any power. What could be the cause of this? Is it possible that my r/r is fried or something?? Going to do some voltage tests today.
