    77 GS750 followed me home

Picked up my winter project Friday. 600.00 and it runs like a top and odometer says 14k. It has some non OEM Bars and kerker 4 in 1 pipes (was this stock?). The seat seems wrong for a 77, but it needs attention no matter what I do. I spent the day yesterday going through the brakes. The front MC was full if sludge and the brake switch was broken. I cleaned the mc and soldered up the switch. The front caliper was frozen. I fixed that and cleaned it all up. Bled the system and all is well. The rear just needed the fluid replaced and bled. Today was cleaning and tune up. The rest of the week is title, tag and begin the dreaming ,planning, budgeting. I think I am gonna join the current bandwagon on the Cafe Racer style as restoring to original or Bobber is not what I want. I can't help but admire the simplicity and sex appeal of a Cafe Racer.

    Wrong and torn seat.

Better view of the Kerker 4 in 1.

Today I sanded and painted the exhaust with VHT and began working on my 78 MGB which is in desperate need of Orange Peel removal.

Exhaust hanging out waiting for me to get done with the MG.

Before and after on the MG's orange peel. tested one panel. I need to add 2000 or 3000 grit sand paper to process. 800-1500-3000-rubbing compound-polish.

Hi, govee. Nice bike i have just bought one also, i find the single disc poor on these modern road conditions so i added another.
      Cheers, Dennis.

        Twins!

I suppose you added the second disc after the picture.

I spent my time today giving the government thier time by spending a few hours going through the title and registration process. I will spend almost as much on paper then I did on the bike.

I did manage to put the newly painted pipes back on the bike tonight. Going to get the inspection in a few days.

Hi, Govee. Yes the picture was taken the day i got the bike. When i fitted the extra disc i used a 550 r/h fork bottom i had, also a 5/8 master cylinder the brakes are a lot better now.
          Cheers, Dennis.

I am going through the possible options of how to put dual discs on my 77 gs750. I was pricing 2 options. GS parts or gsxr parts. I don't see any significant info on using gsxf front end instead of gsxr. What's The difference i would be up against using gsxf? I can pick up a couple different gsxf's for the cost of parts of a gsxr. I considering this for braking performance and not necessarily suspension. I posed this question over on the brakes sub forum, but thought I would kick it around here as well since this is the place where modding takes place.

            Thanks

              No good deed goes....

I noticed the speedo wasn't working correctly so I decided to take the gauge pod apart and figure out how to free the mechanicals from the case. I got the two separated and decide I would do a little PM to the tach and performed the same operation. I decided that since the pod was apart I would sand and paint it. That is where it all went south. I was going to remove the tachs glass from the holder so I could paint it as well and as luck would have it, I broke the glass on the perfectly good tach! I took the glass to a glass shop and for 6 dollars my sin was forgiven. I was putting everything back together and discovered the cheap (plastic) headlamp housing is horribly cracked and not long for this world. I will put that on order but I was use this one to get through inspection. Got it all back together and went to do a quick check of the lights and start her up. Key in turn to on and nothing, nada, bubkis! Spent the next three hours re-engineering the electron, only to realize that my battery is dead. I suppose the time spent becoming more familiar with the electrical system wasn't a waste. But it really hurts a 20+ year aircraft electricians ego that he forgot to check the battery..... UGH, I am going to bed and dream I am a smart man.

I will be watching this. Looks like you have a good base to start from. I recently picked up a 77 GS750B with a stuck engine and burnt wiring harness so progress has been really slow.

Good to see you are getting more accomplished than I have. Keep it up!

Its been a long 5 or so days and haven't done much work on the bike but i Have been riding to begin to see if I can find things that need attention this winter. I also spent much of this weekend helping a friend build a house for his Harley before the weather turns bad.

I rigged up a gear position indicator since the power wire broke of the circuit board on mine and for the life of me I can't solder it back. I think it must have been nickel plated vice soldered on the board. Anyway, I used some LEDs and a small project box. I am getting used to the feel of RPM vs Speed vs sound and current gear is helpful.

A couple of oil leaks I have found. What could be the cause of these?
                    1.

                    2.

                    3.
This one is really perplexing. Where is oil coming from to get on the starter cover?

Almost forgot. Here is my high dollar seat repair. Upcyclers should be proud.

Got some parts from ebay to put dual discs on the front.

Looking at the rear wheel and saw this large metal object on a spoke. What is it?

Here is some possible proof that some one has been inside the valve cover before. Why else would 1 screw be missing?

Lots more to figure out but the bike starts up really easy and runs well. I do believe the speedo is off by 10MPH at highway speeds and the tach is still a little bouncy..

Clean the engine up real good and spray foot powder around the areas you think are leaking. I'll be willing to bet either the tach drive seal or the valve cover gaskets are leaking. Both are easily fixable and the valve cover gasket should be replaced anyway when you do your valve adjustment (you have done that right?).

And just a note, oil can spray around the engine based on wind and movement. So look for both front and back areas for possible leak points.

No valve check/adjustment yet but was reading up on that this past weekend. It is on the list.

The oil leak around starter motor could be the O ring seal on the starter motor nose where it fits into crank case. Those cam cover screws can come loose with vibration from the engine, use a drop of locktight. Also the tach drive seals can leak oil. The thing on rear spoke is a ballance weight.

Thanks for the responses. Is the spoke weight the current balanacing technique for spoked wheels or is balancing now done with stick-on perimeter weights?
