I bought my first bike when I was 16 with the plan to restore it for when I got my license and one of the first things I did was cut off all the wiring with sidecutters because I had no mechanical knowledge.Fortunately former World Champion Barry Smith opened a shop nearby and fitted up enough wiring to allow us to use it as a paddock basher.One thing that stands out on this site is the amount of new members who have a GS because they got it cheaply or for free which allows them entry into the bike world.Every one I know has wrecked what would now be a classic bike or car in an attempt to look cool or to have fun with their mates.I read a letter asking for help which sounded like something most young blokes would write.I get about 40 customers a day into my shop and without a doubt the rudest,most ignorant and dishonest customers are old men.My favourite customers are young blokes who appreciate any help we give them.You blokes have all the knowledge these kids wish they had and we need every young kid possible riding bikes to stop those arsehole politicians banning bikes altogether.So forgive them for bad manners and poor writing and you'll make a big difference to someone you'll never know just as Robert Barr did for me by supplying me O'rings.

I hear you Max, but you have been around this site long enough to know that the good people here are more than eager to share their knowledge and help where they can, many go far beyond what could be considered the call of duty.
But it is pretty hard to make sense out of a disjointed post that by and large makes no sense, although the drift of it is there.
You will know it is hard enough trying to get an accurate diagnosis from a clueless customer standing in front of you, that you can question in real time, let alone over the ethernet.

But what the hell, I will bite, just because I am a superhero and all round nice guy.

Torque down your head, the oil is ten to one coming from the oil gallery that runs up around the stud or the timing chain tunnel O-ring.
Sounds like once the engine gets up to temperature and everything expands it seals up nice and tight, hense the oil leak disappearing after a few miles.
Low compression until everything expands and seals will add to the hard starting too.
Unless you have fitted pods and not rejetted properly.....then you in for a while other can of worms.

Good on you Flyboy.I'm sure he'll learn plenty about all sorts of things on this site.One of my mates has only made one smart statement ever.We should start our life as old men with all our money and all our knowledge and work backwards.It would make life easier .
