And since some mice and/or chipmunks made this a home at some point....decided to PULL THE AIRBOX.....




And then....

WE GOT THE AIRBOX OUT!!!


Here is one of me with my back to the camera and my buddy Rick facing the camera (earlier he is seen holding the tank while I drain the 14+ yr old gas). We're keeping it at his house and using his bike lift, not bad for a couple hours of easy wrenching.


Here is one of the only problems today, which should be an easy fix next time we work on it.


I know the carbs need to be broken down after sitting with old gas for 14+ years in them. I'm going to order the O-ring kit from the guy on here and see how the diaphragms look when we break it down for soaking. The petcock won't even turn, maybe soaking it will help or a replacement, but $80 for the dealer seems steep to me for the new one when there may be a chance of saving this one. Lots of little things need done and some major cleaning. I'm glad we tore it down as there are TONS of things you would miss if you did not take it down....well not this far, but for an 8,600 mile bike, there were a lot of neglected items. Good stuff, tuning in for the ride... as for the fuel tap (can't say petcock, sounds like a friendly rooster to me!)... mine was the same after sitting for a while, couldn't turn it. Dismantled it and discovered the metal disc inside had shattered... new fuel tap for me!

I knew I'd see something similar when I popped the seat off and there were 2 of those chewed nuts on top of the airbox cover....thank God for the screen being in place and keeping anything from getting into the carbs. I have an '03 RC51 that only had 2,600 miles when I picked it up in PA over a year ago and when I took it down for maintenance, you could see where some mice had chewed one wiring cover (but no wires thank God) and made a little pad out of house insulation. Check your airboxes people!

Thanks! I'm guessing the same....I'll update you once I tear it down, but I'm thinking I just need to order the new one and KNOW it's good to go.

Ordered a whole slew of new parts.....waiting on them to ship now.

I managed to get the airbox IN thru the rear with just the wheel off. Seems excessive, but at least you got to some stuff you needed to anyways I guess?

We had always planned on taking it all the way down to address all the neglect issues. Waiting on parts at the moment.

Finally some updates: Extracted the broken exhaust bolts, cleaned like crazy.....replaced the clutch springs and of course that gasket for the cover, new shocks, and remounted the AIRBOX (first lol) engine and swingarm. New plugs too and bought a new chain today. Here are some crappy quick pics of where it's at now.

I'm dying to get back to this thing, but the schedule these days is kind of crazy. That and I'm keeping it in my buddy's garage. I can't wait to hear it run, however the next big hurdle to tackle is the fork seals.....I've never done them before, but I figure it can't be that bad. I know there are some good write ups on here that I'll be referencing. I need to rewire the taillight as well. We opted on keeping the rear fender and with a rubber mallet I almost got it totally undented....the taillight will help cover the imperfection.
