    1983 GR650 Tempter

Okay guys I'm having troubles finding info on this bike, hell depending on who I talk to at my local Suzuki shop the bike doesn't even exist. I apologize now for my lack of proper motorcycle Terminology. My father-in-law purchased this bike 2 riding seasons ago and its kinda going to hell in a hand-basket quick. The P.O. did not take very good care of this bike maintenance wise and kinda jerry rigged parts together. Now we are just trying to get the simple things wrong with it fixed so my brother-in-law can learn on this bike and ride with us.

The main problems we are facing now are the following...

-Fork seals, they appear to be an air ride type of system, but you can see that they are leaking oil. So we aren't sure if you can replace the seals like normal without affecting the air ride part.

-Starter, the starter just went out and when we pulled it we noticed its the same starter in my 82 GS450T. Just wondering if that's what the factory starter was or if that's what the P.O. put in it. I've seen GR650 starters online for twice the cost of a GS450 starter, didn't know if there was a difference.

-Oil leak (bad base gasket under the jugs), Once again sorry for my lack of terminology but its the bottom base gasket that seals the lower end to the top end. Just can't seem to find a gasket kit for this bike.

-Piston Rings, also would like to put some fresh piston rings in if possible while replacing the base gasket or if worse case scenario .5 over pistons and rings, just cant seem to find any. Anyone know of a good source?

-Air Filter, when we went to change the air filter we got in there and the P.O. had taken terry cloth and handmade a "filter". When i went to Suzuki to get one that was the first of many times I've been told there that the bike doesn't exist. We put some pod filters on and it runs, okay, but not like it did. So first i would like to know if anyone has a part number for that air filter and what the factor jet sizes are. I don't know if the re-jetted the carb for their homemade filter or not.

This is what i can remember needing attention but I feel like I'm missing something. Any help info. parts sources would be much appreciate. It really is a fun bike when we first acquired it.

First, sounds like your local dealer is clueless. Most of us use on-line vendors, such as BoulevardSuzuki
Second, we usually abandon the air ride system. The stock springs are tired by now, so we replace them with Progressive springs and the air ride system is no longer required.
The starter can be rebuilt for a fraction of what a replacement costs. Yes, starters do span models, so it is likely the same on both bikes.
You will need to pull the head and cylinder block to repair the leak. OEM gaskets work best and should be available at the link I provided. It is a good time to replace the rings with OEM rings and rebuild your cam chain tensioner as well. All this is available at the link, and they also show the air filter as being available.
It's good to see one of these rare models being brought back to life; good luck.

I like them; they just came out at an inopportune time and did not sell well because of it. I think of it as a British twin that does not leak oil or vibrate as much as an XS650 (which was a British twin clone).

The fork seals are the same as any other fork seal to change. Aside from the place where you insert the air, there are no parts to the "air ride". Its just air. All normal forks are air forks. When forks compress, the air inside is compressed at the same time, and it does resist compression in all cases, whether or not it had some air pressure to start with. If you plan on making this bike work, you might consider looking for a manual for it. There are a number of Tempter owners here. Maybe some of them can help.
