Late to the party
I've never been successful at deleting a post. This was a double that I just overwrote.Last edited by Rob S.; 03-15-2014, 02:42 AM.1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

Late to the party
I'm a little late to this thread, but glad I showed up. Just went through the whole thing, and I'm definitely going to be following along the rest of the way. Could I trouble someone for a brief history lesson?
This is a 1000s, correct? What year?
The 1000s was made from '79 to '82; which year(s) was it a "Wes Cooley" replica?
The '81 and '82 1000s is the Katana?
The 1100s was made in '81, '82 and '83. Were all of them Katanas?
Great work, Chuck. The pics allow me to vicariously restore a motorcycle, and literally restore my day.1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

front and rear calipers are stock. And as for the year..1980 Its a true Cooley according to the VIN AND seeing the front fender still had the factory stripe edges folded under the leading edges. Guy that did that god aweful blue green chit just left them on the underside!! Dead give away that it ( at one time ) was a true original.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Engine and cases are all painted. Next phase is to polish the case covers and rehab the stator and point cover emblems.
Greg..I suggest you copy all the pictures I have posted and the ones in the future to a build file on your computer. That way youve got record of all the stuff.
Handy little trick is to use duct tape behind the intake manifolds to keep water and stuff out when power washing. I also put tape on the old exhaust gaskets and drive them back in for a seal there. I had taken them out before i snapped the pics. Had to do a touch up by the one port so I just stuffed a rag in there.
And yes the paint will come off the boots with some Acetone.
