    Vin question on project bike

I bought what I thought was a 79 GS850G and have tried to cross reference the Vin without any success. Its not 17 fidgets. Frame Vin : GS850105655 Engine Vin : GS850-105658
I'm going to be rebuilding the carbs and are not sure if they are VM26SS or BS34SS.
Any help would be greatful as I am at a dead end with my knowledge of GS's.

The VIN is GS850-105655, the engine number never matches the VIN on the old Suzukis.

This bike came with VM26 carbs if it is a 1979 model. The '79 came with a kick starter, the later 850s didn't have it and came with BS carbs. Does yours have the kickstarter?

OK, the only 850 with kick start and VM carbs was the '79.

So they are mechanically actuated and not constant velocity correct ?
Have had problems with the vaccumm lines and feed line from the petcock . they were off and notnsuren of placement.

Yes, the throttle cable turns a shaft which raises all of the throttle slides mechanically. Vacuum line from the port on the #3 carburetor goes to the petcock. The other ports that look the same on #2 and #4 are float bowl vents.

Just answered a similar question for another member.

                  1979 "N" model GS850GN:
                  frame #s start @ GS850-100370
                  engine #s start @ GS850-100393

                  1980 "T" model GS850GT
                  frame #s start @ GS850-116457
                  engine #s start @ GS850-116520

                  Your frame VIN: GS850-105655 & engine VIN : GS850-105658
are both 1979 "N" model year.

The frame & engine VIN are close, which is what you would expect for an original motor.

Need carb holders (intake boot), jet kit, engine gasket set.
Also, the connection for the tach is broken ( metal rectangle that fits into the tach cable). Don't know if this can be easily replaced or if I need to find an electric one.
