Much appreciated guys!! I love seeing these ole gals come back to life.

Now I'm in search of a replacement exhaust. The one on there now looks solid from the outside, but the baffles are rusted out and rattle around A LOT on both sides.

    I was considering several options:

1: Pick up a V&H street pipe but I like the look of the duals v/s the 4 into 1. MAC is out due to quality. Cost is a consideration as well.

2: Cut off the exhaust ends (cone tips), gut the rusted baffles and install new baffles.

3: Cut the stock pipes at the point where they merge 2 into 1 and weld on new mufflers on.

4: Find a replacement stock set in very good condition.

    Any suggestions? Other options?

As pretty as the rest of it is going to be, I'd use a cheap functional exhaust now and wait for a nice set to come up on eBay or something. A nice set would add up to around $300, $400 for perfect. I notice most people are selling in individual halves instead of as complete sets.

It doesn't look like there's a nice set on eBay just now. Just overpriced junk.

I was getting tired of waiting and starting thinking about signing up for a welding class at the local night school and make a project out of building a stainless system.

The 80-81 exhaust is not a direct swap, unfortunately. The tubes are smaller, and so is the bolt hole spacing at the head. 1100G or GK pipes might bolt up at the head (not sure), but you'd need an adapter bracket at the rear.

Daaaaaaaaang! That came out beautiful. Now I'm having second thoughts about selling my 850 after its top-end refresh.

Will you go with factory-style pinstriping or your own design?

Thinking of a close to factory pattern similar to 850 Combat's. Haven't decided yet. Just depends on how well I can get the stencil to curve and line up. The paint, hardener, stripping stencil and brush arrived today. I'll be practicing on glass to see how it flows before I attempt it on the actual bike parts. That's the beauty of the stencil method I'm going to be using. Goes on like the vinyl tape but you end up with true painted pinstripes.

Me to,tried doing it by hand but I don't have the patience to do the practice you need.

So far I'm a little disappointed with the tape. It works great on straight lines but, even though the say it will make bends, I can't get it to make the sharp bends needed for this project. I'm looking for an alternative method now.

OK, I've taken her out a few times now but for nothing more then a couple rides around the block. She runs great and I'd love to put more miles on her but here's the problem.

Rear tire not worthy of riding on:

If I read this correctly it makes it a week 36 1992 tire:

I already have a new tire already on order. It's a Shinko 230 Road Master 130-90-17 and should arrive some time near the end of this week. Ordered it from Motorcycle Supper Store for $72 delivered. They're running a deal of free shipping on any order through Memorial Day weekend:

Also transferred the exhaust from the 1000GL Frankenstein bike till I find something better:

Tires replaced, pinstripes on, title transferred, insured and registered... She's on the road now:

                    Ytube video of her:

Notice how the lighting changes the color from red to orange. In reality it doesn't look orange but the pearl seems to throw an orange cast when in pictures. I'll post a video in less bright conditions and you can see what I mean.

                      Very, very nice.

Are the airbox top mounting screws missing or loose? It looks saggy.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll check them for sure. That's one of the problems with an extensive dis-assembly. So many little things that can be forgotten.

Edit: Just checked and sure enough. The bolts were missing. Must have been left out after the last time I pulled the carbs to replace the float bowls. Good eye. Thanks again for the heads up. I'll have to fix it when I get her home. Don't have the screws here.

She's been out all day riding. Now it's just a little sorting out time but with a little over 120 miles today without incident, I feel like it's really coming together.

Just curious... I wonder what the recommended "rebreak-in" would be on a bike that hasn't run for over 5 years? Run it hard to get the rings reseated?

Still need to look for a more suitable exhaust then the GL exhaust that's on it now. It looks OK but I was looking for something a little more sporty. I may go with a V&H 4 into 1 when I get the funds. Best price I've seen so far is $354 delivered.

Outstanding! What Mothers product did you use? and what type and how many buffing wheels did you use? Mine are just like the ones you started with. Hard to believe how nice they turned out.

While the cover was off I decided to do a little cleaning up. This is what the cover looked like at first:

After a little aircraft stripper and some wire brushing on the bench grinder I got this:

Then after some 1000, 2000, 2500 grit soapy wet sanding some cheap soapy brillo pads and finally the Mother's I got this:

Time to rest my hands and wait for more parts to arrive.[/QUOTE]
