Hey mate, thought I recognised that screen name!
Glad you're posting up a project thread, keen to follow along. Hopefully you can come join us on some rides when she's all back together.
As for carb cleaning, get yourself to a Yamaha dealer and try to get your hands on some Yamalube carb cleaner... it's in a not quite litre bottle and will do the soak job very nicely...
I disobeyed the label, mixed it 1 to 1 with water, and simmered the carbs over a portable hot plate. Stunk like nobodies business, but did the job in about an hour per carb (I only have 2 though).1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

strip them, dip them, put in new O-rigns, and reassemble, not so hard and it will save you lots of grief down the road
don't half a$$ a rebuild, especially on carbs......
look at my rebuild thread or any of the others, I have lots of pics on the carbs and in various stages of tear down and reassembly, get the rebuild guide\tutorial
O-rings you can order from http://www.cycleorings.com/

Did you also get the intake boot o-rings and stainless bolts?
And don't forget the optional (for a penny) drain bolt o-rings.

Got the boot o-rings, as they were already on my shopping parts list, but way cheaper from Robert. And got the drain bolt o-rings. Unfortunately he won't ship the stainless bolts overseas. No sure why. But I have a local supplier here where I have already bought a heap from, so will source them from him.

While you are there (making your changes), add a signature line that tells what bike you have. That way, you don't have to remember to mention it every time you ask a question. Does not have to be anything fancy, something as simple as "Currently working on an '81 650M"

Where are you getting your bolts from Sam? I've been getting my house mate to pick mine up near where he works in Brendale, can't remember the name of the place now...
Also, I didn't realise you have a current ride in addition to the GS, and even though it's a Honda you're still welcome to join us
If you're keen, don't forget March 8th... I'm not doing the overnighter, just going as far as Casino or somewhere like that and turning back.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Pete, I've been going to a place in Tingalpa. So far they have been the cheapest and closest for me (I work in town so easy to get to during the day).
Might look into that ride and see what I've got on. With a young family I have to try and squeeze rides in around commitments and such. But always keen to get out on the bike!!

Ah ok cool, yeah I'm in the Valley for work but don't really get a chance to duck out too much these days... plus I'd probably lose my free bike parking spot!
I understand with the commitments... I'm actually on call next week so have yet to get someone to cover my Saturday so I can go on the ride. Our team has shrunk by a third recently so it's getting more difficult to swap on call days around...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

So just a bit of an update...
Got the engine and rear wheel out.
Did this to the right hand shockie, just by hitting it with my fist !!
And I now have the engine on my stand that my brother fabricated for me as per my design. I think it is pretty neat.
Carbies are cleaned and I just received the O Rings from Robert, so the next few weeks I will re-assemble them, as well as working on the frame and getting that prepped ready for paint.

Nice work Sam, that engine trolley's handy! I just had mine on the workbench which is fine for the 450 but any heavier and it would've been a nightmare.
Are you painting the engine or leaving it as is?1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie
