Chef, I am still trying to figure out how the C/S sprocket nut, which is torqued down to 65-73 Ft. Lbs. of torque, is threaded into the direction that the crank turns and has a locking tab, just works its way loose and backs out?
This IS NOT a normal occurrence on these bikes. What caused it?

I'm not sure how it happened but it did.
I put it on with a rattle gun and bent a washer over the nut.
If you have the time can you come put it on for me to make sure it doesn't happen again? Splitting the cases was a pita.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

So the inside splines of the sprocket got chewed up and the spinning sprocket sawed through the retaining nut? What brand/material was the sprocket made by/of?

The sprocket was fine. The nut was gone and that is what I replaced.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

Hey Bill,
Wow, lots of good work there.
So you did shave material out of the top of the block? Is that because you put 1150 cylinders on an 1100 block?
Thanks for the PM. It's good to hear from you.
Take care,
Cliff

Chef,
Thanks for posting up all the photos. I'm at work and maybe can't see the last pics before assembly but I'm curious about how clean you get the mating surfaces between the covers, block, cases etc.
It seems to me like you leave quite a bit of gasket material / residue on the surfaces. Not being critical. I'm super anal about it and am wondering if I wasting my time getting mine shiny and maybe even making the two surfaces harder to seal.
One other question which you may not have run into on this build. In your second picture in the first post, looking into the removed clutch there is a small plate with a gasket behind it (I think its called the oil cap gallery and gasket). Does this gasket need sealant applied to it when re assembling?

I cleaned the mating cases free of all old sealant.
I did not use any sealant on that new gasket but installed dry.
I also scrape all old gasket pieces off before installing new gaskets and covers. I hate oil leaks!Last edited by chef1366; 03-25-2014, 12:01 PM.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
