    Getting running my 850G!




    Well, I've finally gotten back to my GS bike. I was planning on having it running last summer, but I didn't know I would have a massive bicycle crash and blow out my summer fun.

    Deadline for running is a Memorial day ride this year!


    The project is a '79 GS850G with 4-1 V&H, K&N pods, & flat slide carbs. I'm running an '82 head and tubeless wheels. I plan on it moving fast a lot better than it did stock, but I'm going to have an adventure getting the tuning up and working.

    The head is completely rebuilt, then a hone job and new rings. The cylinder is in spec so it should do fine. It was smoking a little from the valve seals and that was the deciding factor on ripping it down. (and getting the parts '82 bike for a song from another GS member!)

    I'll keep posted on the build. It's getting rings and cylinder put together this week, so should be able to get bolting the other bits next week and then start it!

        GS April project

        Jetting should be just fine. Haha. I rode this bike stock when I got it first running and jetting is definitely off. It probably didn't help that the PO took a saw to the insides of the megaphones and didn't have an airfilter...

        Nothing is bolted up yet. I'll get it started and go from there. I'm expecting it to be a little rich with the flatslide 34's, performance exhaust and pods, but I already had them, so use what ya got! If all else fails, add more hp until the carbs work.

          Shims

          Waiting on shims...
          The motor is together but the valves are off. I know there is a shim club here, but they said they ordered shims at the shop.

          The bad thing is I already paid a lousy machinist to do the shims when I had the head work done and they are all out of spec!

          It may not be ready by next week. I'll have the Cbr600 f4i rat bike going as a backup but I am waiting on fairings for that one and it isn't comfortable.

            A little bit closer...

            Turns out the 3rd ordered NOS gasket is the wrong one! I'm not having good luck with ebay NOS sellers.
            Re-ordered the right gaskets (cam adjuster and valve cover) and 3 shims we weren't able to use. Very, very close to getting it back. Motor is together but I just don't see it running and getting kinks in it worked out by the weekend.
            We shall see what happens between Wed and Sat!

              STARTED this week!

              Finally got my carbs on! It turns out that the '87 intake manifolds bolt up just the same off the 87 GSXR 750 Mikuni BST34SS flatslide carbs!

              For the record, I had matched them up before taking them off the GSXR motor two years ago, but then mixed the manifolds up and was trying to align using the "up" markings on the manifold boots. That didn't work. One night I finally spent a few hours fiddling until I got them to work.

              NOW: I was able to start the bike but I have two issues.

              Carb#1 is leaking gas out the small hole on the bottom side of the "bell" the air filter pod fits onto.

              Only Carbs #1 and 4 were working as evidenced by the warm header pipes and rough sound. I pulled the plugs and they weren't really wet either.
              I only ran it a minute and shut it down. WHAT I THINK happened, is that the vacuum pipe on top of CARB#2 and #3 were not attached to anything. (I don't know where they went on the original GSXR 750). Maybe they were tied together with vacuum line and a "T" inline.
              I think this caused them not to get fuel.


              We were only using a test bottle of fuel and didn't have the tank attached or vacuum lines because the tank is ready for paint; cleaned, sanded, and dry.

                  Yes, I believe the other pictures had bags over the carbs to wash it. This is the latest pic.

                  SO, here's the story...
                  I was injured in an accident and have been paying off injuries since my last bike post. This summer was the year to get it on the road!
                  I have a mix of parts, '82 head, new top end, 4-1 exhaust, pods, k$n and no real fast engine parts though the '87 flat slides were a bit of a change from the round slides...
                  I got the bike painted and together and then realized it was running pretty rough. I figured it was because it wasn't vacuum synced so i hauled it into the tuner at Two Wheel Dyno Works. I had paid a local mechanic to get the jugs on and the head and shim it (again!) after the machine shop screwed it up. I was quite dispirited with the quality of the shops I worked with on this project. EXCEPT for Two Wheeled Dyno Works, which is incredible!
                  When I got a message from the owner, Nels, he said he thought my cams were off a tooth. Strike one, they were off a tooth and 1 day in the parking lot on a blistering hot Saturday pulling the tank, carbs, pods, cam chain tensioner, cams, and changing the chain one tooth ahead. I started it and it still wasn't starting good. Sure enough, only spark on the left coil pack! Coil 2/3 was dead (which explains the problem I had noticed on the previous post). There goes money on a $400 Dyna ignition, I thought.
                  Fortunately, I looked at ebay right before I ordered and found the whole set for 280 to my door! Wow, cheaper than Z1!

                  Another hot, miserable afternoon was spent in the parking lot at the shop attaching the Dyna S to the bike, not a cloud in sight and one of the hottest days of the year to be working on asphalt (97° @7pm in the dyno box!). I must say the directions are NOT adequate and it was not clear as day to a mechanic and first time installer. I did call Dynatek, which helped a little. Yes, it's easy now that I know what to do but I find their directions woefully inadequate of pictures to know what to look for. After a couple hours getting it installed, I found that Dynatek SCREWED UP and the slots in the plate were drilled WRONG. I ended up drilling new holes and elongating the current slots while also drilling a new 1/2" sight hole to align the timing marks. Basically, every hole was off 1/4" which is very annoying. Dynotek shouldn't sell this kit as plug and play. I wish I would have known as I could have done a much cleaner job with the plate off the bike in my shop and not drilling it on the bike. Grrrh.

                  So, after re-aligning the backing plate, everything lined up perfectly and she fired to life with a roar!

                  It did one tuning run on the dyno and after five minutes Nels came out grinning. "This thing rips!" was all he could say. It sounded like the only thing I need is to get the idle down to normal. The knob wouldn't drop all the way so I need to see if there is a vacuum leak or an adjustment that I can find to lower it.

                  Next to do:
                  Mounting some Bates hard bags to the sides and a different pair of bars with a better bend to go with a medium size fairing. I have ATV bars currently, but I want about four inches up and four inches back. I have the stock bars but I don't like their bend either. I'm a dirt biker and a motocross bend feels natural to me, unlike the cruiser bend of the originals. I probably will mount the top case (which looks ugly IMHO) but will be functional for a big ride way up north I am still planning. The top case will be used only for certain big trips as it even has a rack for strapping on a bedroll or tent. I'm thinking of a fishing pole too!

                  Finally, I found the correct vintage license plate for the bike to keep it a classic since we can run them in WA! For $40, I couldn't be more pleased. I'll post up some finished pics soon.[URL=

                      Well, after riding it a bit tonight, it's definitely not right. The bottom end had a bog and it rips from half throttle to the top (main jet).
                      I feel I might have gotten the brush off from the tuner 'cause it's definitely not spot on yet...

                        I'm looking at selling my gs850 baby. Most of the write up is here. I had another health issue (blew out my ankle) and am disappointed to let her go. Licensed with original style vintage plates for Washington. It runs good but still needs a little tuning. Pulls like a train on top. Extras including donor bike, hard bags, which I may include.

                          Well, I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but hey(!), it's MY THREAD! :-)
                          I didn't end up selling my GS after all. It's been an extremely rough last few years due to major accidents and rehab but I finally got my bike back running again! Woohoo!!
                          It had sit since Sept of 2015, but I'd kept the tender going and only had to clean the carbs again. (They were amazingly pretty clean anyways). Only the slightest rust in the bowl. That's a testament to non-ethanol gas!

                          I ended up doing the tank with a sealer (yes, the best I could find), and the gas is clean now... Yipee! That's a first for this old bike... (insert gas pic).

                          The carbs are synced and I just brought it in to the somewhat local tuning shop once again. I only know enough to be dangerous when tuning so I'm hoping I get somewhere this time. I'll keep y'all posted and hopeful to get it back in another week or two! (He is slammed)

                            Glad you didn't sell it. It's a cool bike, though I'd cut that massive step in the pillion area of the saddle down to streamline the looks.
