Take a piece of cardboard and poke 3 holes with a phillips screw driver and number each hole 1 thru 3. Unplug the startor and stick one leg in each hole. Start with the NEG probe on 1 and read what AC volts are at 2 and 3..write it down. Move NEG probe to number 2 and check across 3 and 1..then again with the NEG in number 3. If your readings all fall withing the AC volts stated in the manual the stator is ok. So next culprit would be the regulator.
Start with a freshly full charged battery so it wiil stay running when you unplug the stator wires.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550
NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.
I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Looking to upgrade the coils and ignition too, any suggestions on what to upgrade to? Was looking at different coils and didn't realize there was so many options with size, ohms, etc. What is the ideal rating and what would be some reasons for the higher ohm ones? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm pretty lost when it comes to vehicle electronics.

Ok guys, got a new stator and regulator/rectifier for my bike. Got digging deeper into the wiring, found there was 2 regulators wired up lol. A regulator/rectifier and the original regulator were wired in parallel with each other. Could this have been the problem with my battery not charging? Next question, the wiring diagram shows the one wire of the stator going through the switch then back to the regulator/rectifier, is this necessary and should the red wire off the regulator/rectifier be fused?

It sounds pretty unconventional but I would yield to the installation instructions of the R/R manufacturer. My guess is that either the PO didn't realize he had a separate regulator or that he was installing a R/R instead of just a rectifier.

You don't have an R/R, you have separate components. Did you confirm by testing what is bad?
You can reroute the wire that goes to the left handlebar switch directly to the regulator, because that's where it ends up anyway1978 GS 1000 (since new)
