JAG - Seeking Help. OK OK don't rub it in!!

    Hi all,

Well as I'm off work for a while and my bank are a bunch of A-wipes, now seems a good time to completely OD on the credit card and get my dream built, or at least started. Total available budget £3000.

I need some help. God I hate typing that. Anyway what I have is a nearly complete original '79 UK 750E that's been fitted with UK spec '78 DB spoked wheels (twin disk).

    What I want is this;

So, wheels I'm looking at a 150/70 R18 on the rear and something suitable for the front. I need rim sizes for front and rear, rim options, new ally jobs are out of budget, and some tyre recommendations. Advice on spacers and offsets needed as well.

Swingarm - Thats a GSX(UK)11oo jobbie. I've got a source for that at £65 + VAT. If anyone can better that please let me know.

Shox - I want some more lift. Advice sources gratefully accepted. At the moment I'm looking at Bitubo's for a GSX1100

I also need something doing to the stock front legs, or a complete new set up.

    Engine.
Want an 850 upgrade. Preferably running GS1000 28mm Mikuni slides through a standard box with a K&N high flow filter. Need a 750 airbox.

    Front End.
Clocks. I think that dash is off an 'L' model. Any ideas? I love that separate light cluster.

    Tail.
Any ideas on how to flush fit the tail light?

    Any other advice warmly welcome.

    God that was painful.

Well mate I can't help you with any of that, really. But I do hate to see a "0 replies" thread!

Gotta ask, though, what do you mean by "850 upgrade"? The 850 donk, being a shaftie, won't go into your setup. Well, *anything* can be made to fit, but it would be easier to get a GS850G and mod that instead.

Unless of course you mean putting 850 barrels, pistons etc. onto your 750 crankcases. Not sure if that can be done without too much palaver. If the stroke is the same then it could be achievable.

Or perhaps you are looking at an oversise Wiseco kit or something like that?

If you want more lift for the shockies, then determine how much longer you want the shockies to be eye-to-eye, and get a crew like IKON or whoever to make up a pair to order. That's one option, anyway.

Re. the front forks, I got the IKON crew to make me up some heavy-duty springs (wound from 5mm wire instead of the standard 4.5mm) and I think it's been a great improvement. But I'm one of those sorts who likes their suspension super-firm.

All the best with your project, JAG.

    Cheers,
    Mike.

Check out Ikon, they made me some custom length aluminium rear shocks and they are great. For the front I'd go with Sonic Springs (im still waiting for mine to arrive in from the US ). Or better yet, pick up a complete second hand gsxr front end (88+) with the stock rims and fit those with some sonics

the 850 upgrade.... if you want to upgrade the engine, may aswell stick the 1000 in it. Probably cost you the same :s

Bitubos are nice. However, if you speak to Hagon or Ikon they'll fit you out with some longer shocks for a bit less dosh. Also, a guy on here fitted some really nice shocks from Tecbikeparts - £89 and getting a very good reputation with the Trumpet boys.

Clocks: post 1980 550 or 650 have the separate instruments. They'll bolt right on and will be easier to find than L clocks over here.

VM28s will work well. You'll have to change the choke mechanism over as they are cable operated but the 750 lever system will bolt straight on.

if you go for a 1k engine instead of the 850 top end you'll lose the kickstart.

You're going to struggle on the wheels and your best bet would be to get some Akront rims laced on.
