The Barcalounger gets a rebuild

Well I finally got a shop.

I had to move this summer and lost access to my "workspace" and the 550/673 project stalled, http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...e-s&highlight=. But now I have a place to project, wrench, curse, fart, create and learn until i pass out.

On to the subject at hand....... my 81 GS750E aka. "Tha Barcalounger"
So last month I was cruisin Craigslist, when i came across a 2011 GSXR 750 part out ad and i scored a complete front end(forks, controls, wheel, brakes, no top yoke though) and a rear wheel for "a very special price", hoping to be able to do something with it. Enter the 750...

I've had this bike for almost 2 years now, but for the past 2 months it has been parked in a garage, not running..... PO did a tank lining (Kreem?) poorly and it has pealed off and surrounded my petcock filter. When I would ride the bike, I would periodically have fuel starvation issues that became more frequent. So frequent in fact that no gas would reach the carbs. "Blast!" said I, as I raised my closed fist of utter disappointment and disgust above this unruly beast. Disgust quickly turned to love again, because....come on, its a GS. Time for a rebuild. Oh yea, dont mind the tail section on the front there... my shop partner and I were having a little fun. Its off a 1999 TL1000r he is parting out. One of these days i will find the right TL for me.

After waking up from blackout, ^this is what I saw^. No turning back now, got to keep on going.....

    Now thats more like it!

Now, this is all mock up, but its all going to work. Thing on the TO DO list are as follows

    · Bearing swap for the front and swingarm
    · Figure out a s/a pivot bolt/top hat spacer combo that works the best (I have a few ideas a brewing)
    · Modify the 81 850 tank to fit the frame
    · Chain line (UUUGGGHHHHHHHH!!!) not too crazy out of wack.
    · Swap bearings to fit the 2011 wheel in the 2007 gixxer swinger

Then of course a carb rebuild and valve adjustments, gaskets and an oil change, paint and polish, the usual tid-bits.

Here she sits next to the 550 and the BAJA 22r Toyota. I have new parts and a motor from a 93 Katana 600 that will be finishing up the 550.

And all cleaned up at 3am.

I am seven kinds of green with envy right now. Both for your workspace and those killer machines. Great job on the 750. That late model suspension really sets it off. That 550 doesn't look too bad either.

Thanks Shadow. I went in on that shop with two of my good buddies. We all do pretty much the same thing so it works out great. Only had the space for less than a week.....

Alright, life has a way of keeping you from doing what you want sometimes. But then patience and meditation kicked in and I found myself in the shop again. (YAY! )

Enough of that pity party, Lets talk about bikes!!!!!

So I have run into a problem regarding the chainline....... it goes right through the frame with the 2011 gsxr750 rear wheel. Bummer. Its a 5.5in rim so Im thinking about running a 4in rim to be able to suck the chain through the frame and swinger. My heart is not necessarily set on using that s/a, though it would look nice. Does anyone have a suggestion on which bikes had a 4in rear wheel?? I have been searching to no avail and cannot find "the numbers" (rim width and axle dia.) lemmie know what you all think...

          Thanks in advance, Neal

The 1989 GSXR 1100 were 4.5x17" in that similar curved three spoke pattern. There are also the 4.5x18" 1988 GSXR 1100.

You might search some of the smaller bandits, they probably cam with smaller rears that the Big GSXR's.

The 750 would look bad if you could get something to work.

              Thanks!

Thank you Posplayr for that information. when i get the motor back in the frame, Ill do some more measurements so see what I can get away with.

In other news, I was able to fit the rear end of a 1993 Katana 600 on my 1980 gs550 with very little modifications. Ill do a write up on that later. My shop partner has been taking pictures for me while my phone is dead (smashed screen) and am waiting for him to email them to me so I can post photos for ya`ll. Till then, use that ol imagination and such.

ok, so I know it's been a while but, you know, life happens....

UPDATE!!! so I may have figured out a solution to my chainline problem. 1999 bandit 1200 rear wheel with the cush drive from the 2011 750 rear wheel.. bearing swap to accept the axle size and such and should be golden. maybe. I guess we'll find out. Similarly, the chainline on the 550 i am rebuilding at the same time is out of wack. But not as severe as the 750 so I thought I could find a slightly off set c.s. sprocket to align the rings for the c.l.... are all GS (not gsx or gsxr) c.s. sprocket splines the same? or do they all have their own spline pattern? internet has been vague in that respect...

                    Its Back!!!!!

so alot of my progress on updating this thread, for lack of a better term has disappeared. my laptop took a dump and all my photos with it. Progress on the bike, on the other hand, has not stopped and I have proof.

Behold... http://i800.photobucket.com/albums/yy286/Team_Neal/20151112_145058_zpsl34lclmh.jpg

So as all builds go, there were a few revisions to the initial conception. I did not like the GSXR750 swingarm in the frame; so i used a GS1100 ally swinger instead. I really wanted to retain the stock seat and rear light, but 5" shorter. For the life of me I could not get the pan massaged in just the right way, so I decided I would make one.....

                      That GSX-R swing-arm looked great.

There was potential frame to swingarm interference and the rear wheel hub was super wide . So wide in fact that the chain would have shared real estate with frame next to the swingarm pivot . Not gonna cut this one up. Ill weld my own frame before i do that. So out goes the gsxr750 s/a, in goes the gs1100 one.

More photos on my photobucket page.
