    82 GS1100G short chop project.

    A little while back I bought a gs1100g . It's an 82 with what appears to be several years of neglect, and at least one round of "it's gonna be a bobber" on it. With that in mind I bought it as a non-stock project bike. Didn't think I would do any type of build thread when I bought but ....why not. I am no probuilder etc., but have captured some decent pics along the way. Any way this first pic is more or less how I got it. I plan on a variety of mods, some cosmetic, some functional. I will get more pics up soon, I have recently reshaped the front fender and gotten a good ways into making the hinged solo seat for it. Carbs went in the soak tank for 3 days, needles were gunked up with tar etc. All the vacuum slides are in good shape, and all the choke slides and other parts are moving . as long as there are no leaks I should at least be able to run it a little soon.     Here is the redesigned front fender. A little leaner and meaner than the original, with the seems welded to keep it rigid. Soon to be finished up and ready for paint.

      A quick shot of what it will look like on the bike. I have a new front tire for it, and need to get fork seals soon. Front brake pads are gonna need to e replaced too, got soaked in fork oil when the seals let go.

        Getting a seat together for this project. It is my first from scratch seat project, and so far so good!!

          Apparently only one pic per post is allowed so here is where it is now. Still have a bunch of work left to do but, the shape is good, and the barrel hinge works well.

            No, you can do 10 at a time, if you jump through a hoop or two.

              Thanks Steve. Did the carb soak with Pinesol on this bike. So far I am very impressed with the results. Outside is clean, to the point where you really notice some deep scratches in the covers on top. Insides appear to have cleaned up nicely as well. All the moving parts are moving freely once again. One of the needles was so gunked with like a black tar like blob, I had to use some leverage to get it out. Flathead screwdriver with the tip wrapped in masking tape a few times to avoid scratches worked really well for this. I mixed mine, Pinesol, with filtered water 50/50, and had some parts soaking in it for as long as 3 days. I let vacuum diaphragms, and needles soak for about 24 hours with no signs of the rubber having issues with the solution. I did spray the carbs with traditional carb cleaner before soaking to try and get the heaviest stuff loosened up inside, and out. I reset all the floats, and reassembled the rest. Currently sitting on the bike waiting for me to route the new choke cable. Moving it down off the bars, I bought a universal choke kit at the local autoparts store for about 7 bucks. Haven, quite decided where to mount it just yet. On another note, my clean clear title arrived for this bike within the last couple days!!

                Hope the PineSol works. I am not completely convinced that it will do so.

                You are also inviting other 'newbie' problems by not separating your rack.

                There is no way to replace all the o-rings unless you do so, neither can you clean out all the passages that NEED to be cleaned.

                I have said it before, I'll say it again (my sig has reached the character limit so I can't put it there):

                  Taking on same project, picked up a 82 GS1100GL that sat for years. Will be doing carb cleaning. As much a sit sucks, have ot take time and do it without short cuts because it will come back to bite ya later. Will be doing my cleaning in the next two weeks or so.

                    I understand there are many of you with a different approach to things, and appreciate the links to parts etc. I am working on doing a build with minimum investment. It may be I need to spend some money on carb seals etc., but for now I am working with what I have. Since this bike currently has pod filters etc. , pulling the carbs off is a 20 minute job if I need to go back in. At the current time I am avoiding the "Newbie" mistake of throwing a ton of money at stuff without spending the time to clean, adjust and inspect the bike. Just got the title, so at least now I have something that can be registered when done. Thanks
