Bandit 1200 components into GS1000 frame?
Considering using 1200 bandit components for a GS based restomod and have ready many articles about GS1100 based swaps. Will the bandit swinger, engine, etc. fit a GS1000 frame. Looking at pics of a 1980-81 GS1100 frame and an earlier GS1000 frame I don't see and difference. Thanks for great resource!Tags: None

The 1100 engine goes into the 1000 frame with just a new set of engine mounts... Frame is very similar.1980 GS1000G - Sold

I believe the B12 swingarm will go into the GS1000/GS1100 frame. You just need some new "top hats". You will need to offset your front sproket for the chain run if you are using the GS1000 2v or GS1100 4v. The front end will also fit as they are the same bearings on the yokes, but you need to alter the stem as the B12 stems are longer that the GS ones, and you will need new lock stops too.
Slightly different, but this is a pic of my Katana with a GSX1100F Powerscreen motor and GSXR750wr swingarm fitted, which went straight in.

What did you use for the bottom rear mounts, and what are top hats?
I started this project by buying a complete 1200 Bandit, 1997 with 27k miles for $700.00. Most of the plastics are cracked (loose/missing fasteners), but has (what appears to be) a complete 4-2-1 kerker system. It had an electrical issue that the tuner car "mechanic" owner couldn't figure out so he was jump starting the bike. Some time with a schematic and found a bad clutch interlock switch. Also needs the clutch slave cylinder rebuilt, parts on the way. Will get into the carbs to check jetting and do a valve adjustment so the bike is running correctly before I remove any components.

You can use the standard rear mounts if you use these sizes Not sure what the size is for the top hats, you just need to compare the size of the bearings on the swing arm to the swing arm pivot arm on the GS frame. The Bandit ones should be bigger, I think, and the swing arm spindle would therefore be bigger, so you'll need a top hat to shrink them down to the size of the GS spindle.

Top hats? Don't have any drawings/photos (which would be helpful) but basically it's something that you need to make or have made up. It's a combined replacement metal spacer (to prevent the swing arm sliding around side to side against the frame as the bike moves - this spacer normally being there as standard in some form anyway) and something to provide a metal sleeve to reduce the diameter of the tube that the swingarm's spindle goes through (on the assumption, as I think in your case, that the swingarm will have a larger diameter spindle tube than the diameter of the spindle designed for the original frame - it being a lot of work to machine out the frame to take a larger spindle!) It's basically a hollow metal tube (the sleeve-down) with a solid washer or about 2-3mm thick metal spacer (as thick as you need, fundamentally) blocking off one end. Usually it's machined all in one so that it's good and solid. It's therefore kind of the shape of a top hat (a la Fred Astaire) - or maybe the mathematical Pi Greek symbol? Look at Katana Owners' Club UK and Old Skool Suzuki websites, Projects sections. You should find a load of information and people doing exactly the same thing as you want (and me probably giving the same kind of advice ). It's a pretty common modification.

Me again. Just had a quick look and, fingers crossed, you might well be lucky and the swing arm will fit straight into a GS1000 frame without spacing problems (UK vs US vs other models' differences notwithstanding...). See, for instance, http://www.katanaownersclub.co.uk/fo...php?f=9&t=6076.

FYI the Bandit/ GSXR1100/ Katana motor is almost 75lbs lighter than the 16v GS motor. The Bandit and 89-90 GSXR1100 motor have a straight cut gear on the crank where the 88-94 Katana 1100 has a heli cut gear on the crank. Just some info some might wantMy stable

Thanks all. Bought a 97 1200 bandit with 27k miles for $700. Looks like a stock 4-2-1 header with Kerker mid pipe and silencer. Had to jump the clutch interlock switch to get it started, need to replace clutch slave cylinder cup to ride it. plastics are junk, but should be able to sell frame, tank etc and get some money back.
Planning on making a template or fixture of the mono shock setup and install that on a GS1000/1100. If the frame has no value I'll just cut all the mounting crossbars out and graft it into the GS.
As for the GS, rather than cut up an E, I'm looking for a G as they seem to have less value/demand but don't have the cruiser L look. Am I right on this?
