    1979 GS850 Restoration

All right, so I am completely new to all of this. I have been looking through this site for the past couple weeks while eagerly awaiting my time to pick up the 1979 GS850 I now have sitting in my garage. I paid $150 for it, but I know there is a lot that needs to go into it. I'm going to need a lot of advice and from what I've read you all have plenty of it. The bike that I picked up has no carburetor, battery, airbox. Brake lines are shot, two of the spark plugs are rusted, the seat is torn up and the foam is not all there. The box that holds the battery is rusted really badly. The bike's last license plate is from New York, so I'm thinking that some of the rust is from it being close to the salt water. Again I'm new at this and I could very well be wrong. I have started the process of stripping the bike down to get everything cleaned and see what is good to stay and what needs to be replaced. I know that plenty of work and parts need to be put into this and I'm really hoping you all can help me get this bike back up and running. I've always wanted to ride and after reading about this bike I want/need to get it back to being road worthy. I will post pictures of it as soon as I can. Thank you for your time and any help/advice that you can offer.

Yes, pictures are a must on any new project. You need to show where it started. That way we can seen the progress. Good luck with the new bike and don't hesitate to ask questions along the way.

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

Sorry, can't quite agree with that reasoning.

Although there isn't much of New York west of Buffalo, Buffalo is only 20 miles closer to salt water than Knoxville, TN.

Would ebay be my best chance at getting carbs and an air cleaner?

Could be from the salt they use to melt the snow. When I lived in Rochester, NY the streets would be covered in a salt residue for a month or more after all the snow was melted. Just depends on how much rain we got. That first month or so sure did attract the brown stuff.

Post what you need on the parts wanted section first. I may have the airbox, will let you know.
