    GS1000/GS650 interchangeability?

    Hi,

I recently picked up a '81 GS650 L (cheap) that I'm restoring. I've got an opertunity to get a '80 GS1000 for short cash. I'm wondering how much I can pull off the 1000 that can fit the 650, or visa versa. Any info in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks for the look!

Is the '80 an L as well?

Whether it's a 1000GL or 1000G, probably very little without mild to heavy modification. The engine, frame, drive train, and body pieces (tank, seat, etc) are all very different.

If you're looking for a parts bike, you typically at least want the same engine. (Or at least one in the same ballpark, like 850 vs 1000.)

Brakes are the same, not sure about L brakes but I think so. Front wheel, except for the bearings. Turn signals probably. Battery might be the same. Not much really, as the 650 is a bit of a bastard child, the engine is completely different from the rest of the line.

Life is too short to ride an L.

Yes, the '80 is an "L".
