1985 Suzuki gs550e motor rebuild. Mods??

I'm looking to see if I can put like a gs750 pistons and cylinders on the 550 case ? It was going to be my sons first bike but was KiA in Iraq before he got to ever ride it . Now it is being gone through to pay tribute to my son. I would like to get more displacement if I could . I'm kind of a big guy. Thanks for the input in advance. Any mods would be great though!

Although I saw a thread about someone suggesting using 750 pistons, I am not sure how well it worked. Send a private message to Tkent02 though as I know he did a 550 to 650 top end conversion and advocates for it a lot. He might be able to help guide you.

That's a completely different engine on the '85. Possibly the 650 cylinder would fit with custom pistons but it's not likely.
Don't know what you can do, sorry.

I've not yet heard of anyone getting more displacement out of the 550es, beyond boring it out.

Swapping in an entire engine might be easier than grafting on a different head. If you can mate a TSCC 16V 750e/es/ef head, you're going to have to rig up something custom on the airbox side as the 550 uses a unique carburetor setup. My suspicion is pods will be the answer there, as you'll already have plenty of jetting issues to sort out.

My condolences on the loss of your son. I wish you the best of luck in your project.

That 750 engine is huge compared to the 550's engine. Maybe an early GSXR engine would be of similar size, but that kind of power increase would likely overwhelm the 550's frame.

How big are you that 64 HP cant haul your carcass?
The frame ont he 83-86 550 has a tube that sits between the carbs and getting a rack of four carbs in the same pace would likely not be possible. The tube would be in the way as it is it site between the twin carbs.

Just tune it up its a pretty awesome bike without anything much done to it.

Lol. I am rebuilding it and figured while it was apart I could modify it some.

How thick is the cylinder sleeve? You can always bore it and use custom pistons in a larger diameter, maybe a little higher compression. Maybe bigger valves? A little porting?
I'm sure you can find performance cams for it, probably find some modern carburetors and make them fit.

I dont think there are any cams available from back in the day. Maybe someone can make a custom job.
Dynojet and K&N make a kit thouhg im not sure if hteir is a great power increase from that.
It was jetted l3eaner in the US than in Canada due to the EPA so there is prob some real gain to be made with a stock pipe.

                          Hmm
Wiseco made a kit for this but im sure they got burned up in club racing long ago
you see an odd one every now and again on ebay.

                            may have some guidance

I wonder if Wiseco could be convinced to cast some pistons for this again and what the min order would have to be.

It has been sitting for 7 years since my son was killed. The motor is coming apart any way. Just tuning it up is not an option.
