Mono shock 1984 Pop Up

Hey All

restoring a 1984 Katana 750SE Canadian LTD.

Question - does anyone know how to disassemble the back mono shock? I have it off the bike but want to do a little clean up/painting and rebuild if necessary, but can not figure out how to take it apart.

Will be the same mono shock that is on the 1984, 85 and 86 Pop up Kats.

If it is able to be disassembled, you may have to send it out to a specialist, such as Traxxion.

I guarantee it needs a rebuild, OEM shocks are questionable when new and 30 years hasn't improved it any. Many OEM shocks are not made to come apart again and often need bits ground off to be able to disassemble them. Your best bet would be to ask some of the suspension specialists about it and see if one will do it for you. I might try Race Tech first for info as they have messed with a lot of older OEM shocks. Seeing as how you are in Ontario you could try Joe Skidd at SSS: http://superiorsettings.com/

I don't know if he is still doing customer work or not, his website hasn't changed in many years. He is usually willing to give most stuff a shot and is a top notch suspension guy north of the 49th.

I would caution you against disassembly yourself without proper tools.
A lot of pressure locked up in the spring despites its small size.

Hey Thanks Guys
The 1978 GS750 I restored a few years back had pretty basic back shocks (both sides) they were too easy to take apart. Large washer like metal ring at the top end slid out real easy on them once you put the spring compressor to it. Unfortunately the 84 Kat mono shock does not look like there is anything that can be removed once the spring is compressed. There has to be a way, but you never know they could have pressure fittings on them.

People here are speaking from combined centuries of experience: Take it to a professional or simply replace it with a Hagon or some such.
