This is ridiculous.
Wanting the wrong things for a motorcycle does not make you an idiot. A childish and lazy way to address their concerns.
I implore you to strongly consider rethinking the straight pipes. Not neccessarily for noise, I am a hooligan through and through, but for performance. There are plenty of loud bikes and other vehicles out there, a GS450 isnt going to be that loud.
Would you chastize a person for having open pipes on a hot rod?
Lots of people enjoy their hardtails. I strongly recommend considering a frame up build, with a frame that was intentionally engineered to withstand the stresses that a hardtail experiences, especially at LOW speed, which is far more abusive than high speed.
The GS450 is not a good candidate for your intentions. This much is fact. The carbs won't like your approach, the bike is too small to be comfortable chopper, and dude, you can make that bike SSSOOOO MUCH MORE. You can big bore it, cheap. You can upgrade damn near everything to the point where the performance will flattout surprise you.

By the way, why the members here would not want to have a membership of diverse tastes and styles is completely beyond me. Many of the vocal members here sure do give the impression that it's either "their way or the highway", which in the hobby and sport of motorcycling has absolutely no residence.
My 70 year old trucker grandpa daily drove a late 70s dodge prospector with a 318 and cherry bombs on it. I don't know how you all were raised, but ain't nothin' wrong with HotRoddin' in my book.

I agree DohcBikes! Like you stated, many of the "vocal" members on here give the impression of "their way or the highway". I think some of them should take a lesson on how to ignore a thread that they do not have anything constructive to say. Seems like a few just want to insult other people. Great forum for technical info but IMHO the "off topic" parts are a waste!Ron

Loud pipes are the domain of the selfish. They create ill well among the public against ALL motorcyclist, which is my beef. Beyond this I don't really care what one does with their bike. It's a shame when someone hacks up a nice older bike so hopefully the starting point is something befitting the sawzall. That part is just a quibble, it's the noise crap that's gotta stop.Ed

There is no need to be understanding towards people who run open pipes on public roads. Earlier, my opinion was a long as you keep your open pipe outside villages/cities, I don't care. However, that has changed recently: Here in Switzerland, where open pipes are illegal, we had/have some wise-a$$es which built a bypass into their exhausts, so they could get super-loud in the valleys. Alright, fine.
Well, it wasn't before long before it got to the point where you couldn't go hiking (which is kinda popular pastime here) in most areas without having constant motor noise around you. And some special-grade jacka$$es even left their bypass open in cities, where even more people got blasted with some cool noise.
Engine sounds, as cool as they are, get very old, very fast - I do say this as a person who is regularly around (and does some light maintenance to) an engine with a peak power output of 1000hp with a displacement of 30'000cm³, and all this thing gets in terms of an exhaust is a collector. It's cool. But even this gets old.
We here now have newspaper articles revolving around the issue of motorcycle exhausts, the police cracking down on motorcyclists in general, I get queer reactions for my '79 motorcycle which is legally allowed to be louder than modern models, the general populace not liking motorcycles at all, and the vehicle inspection making it harder and harder to get nice old bikes road legal. Among a multitude of other things.
You'll understand that can make one's blood boil.
Nobody on the GSR "truly" cares what you do to your bike – they might be simply not interested to help out, nothing wrong with that. Maybe groan and bitch about cutting up a fine bike, but yeah. Who wouldn't about a topic close to one's heart?
Open pipes are only secondarily a matter of taste or style - on a bike which is intended to be used outside the track, it's a matter of one's attitude.
If we are to get along with each other, everyone has to make a compromise. He didnt get "****y" with anyone. You called him an idiot. He has actually handled himself very well considering the embarrassing attitude of some of the posters here.
"Hardtails have no place onthe blah blah" yea, right. Ever heard of Iron Butt rallys? Yea, plenty of hardtails out there that ride across the entire country every year.
It is just as much the right of the o.p. to ride what he wants as it is your right to ride what you want. You are being very childish.
