I bought this from a lady who's son left it covered in her garden for 2 years. It was in OK shape but paid only 250 for it.
I put a new solenoid, stator, regulator/rectifier to get the electric starter working.
Figured out the nuances of the vacuum petcock and have it set properly (the "dial" is offset by 22.5 degrees and so the "prime" and "down arrow" dont match what the petcock is actually doing)
I spent many hours on the carbs (cleaning, new jets, needles, float height, etc). I'm finally happy with the air/fuel and performance!
New tires, air filter, battery, and many other items were fixed. I love this bike!
My persisting problem is the gear indicator mechanism leaking oil. I've replaced the O'ring 2 times (from different ebay merchants). I looked at BikeCliffs website and searched the forum, but only found info on replacing the o-ring, nothing helping me with a leak that seems to be caused by something else in that mechanism.
i've taken the thing apart more than a handful of times, trying grease, cleaning the contact surface, everything looks good including the o-ring, but it continues to leak oil. I see the oil fizzing out near the bottom rear screw of the assembly. My last guess is that the plastic assembly has a sub-visible crack allowing oil to leak.
Is there something more common or more insidious that I am missing? Thanks in advance for everyone's help!
Nick
