Kiwi Canuck tries his Luck with a Six Fiddy

I have a customer who I've been dealing with for over 20 years and recently he told me he has an old Suzuki GS in his parents garage that he thought I might be interested in, I think I mentioned I was restoring old Suzuki's at some point.

So after about 6 months of casual chat he let me know it needs to be gone from the garage in a week if I want it.

I went over yesterday and got my first look at the mystery Suzuki, it was a 1981 GS650E with Chain Drive. (I think it's an '81, date on VIN was 3/81)

No keys and the steering was locked, so I couldn't move it to get a good look at it but was able to pick the helmet lock and remove it.

I made a set of keys from the helmet lock and will return next week to trailer it home, I was surprised that I could not find a key code anywhere on any lock.

Here's the 2 pictures I took, got a bit distracted once I pulled all the stuff that was stacked on top of the bike off and realized I didn't take any other pictures.

It does have an after market mini fairing installed, not sure what brand but I'll find out soon enough.

Couple of pictures, VIN label and Speedo, 34,000 KM so well used and ridden, believe it's been parked for 20 years.

Always to fun to find a mystery Suzuki hidden somewhere. Charlie sure likes his, I think they make great commuters.

We demand more pictures! Especially since you mentioned some small aftermarket fairing.

              Haha. Winning without even trying.

Nice score, Dave. Not too many 650E left out here.

Wow, really weird. Can you delete that so we don't infect the GSR and crash the site

Hey, thanks for all the comments and yes I need to post more pictures.

I was surprised when I got home to find I only had 2 pictures on my phone, I guess the excitement of uncovering the bike and then getting the helmet lock off completely distracted me from the most important job at hand, get pictures for the guys on GSR, I'll make sure I don't let you guys down in future.

I've been on ebay and Parts Outlaw and there are still tons of NOS and new parts available for this bike, even new mirrors and handle bar switch assemblies, I noticed both mirrors were cracked and the switches were not in good shape.

I'll wait till I get it home and make sure it's worth restoring before I start buying parts.

I have been doing a bit of research on a stock exhaust system, the bike has a very rusty and beat up 4-1 system on it so that's something that will need to be addressed, I'll need to make sure I find out if the GS650G/GL and E have the same exhaust but I suspect not.

I wish I had picked the bike up already as I'm stuck in 18" of snow here and just hanging out wishing I could be tearing into a new project.

Should have some pictures posted in a few days.

Ha ha, no chance. Well not yet anyway.

I seem to have trouble parting with bikes lately, especially when they have "Suzuki" & "GS" in the name.

Thanks Charlie, soon as she's home I'll get some baby pictures posted.

Now I need to come up with a name for her as well.

That's what I figured.I can respect that but had had to try. Shouldn't have let the 650 go but that life thing got in the way
