82 gs650 gl not firing and starting

Have an 82 gs 650.....threw a rod got a (all used parts) new case new pistons cylinder jugs put it all back together got timing marks lined up on cams and crankshaft . Try to start it and it backfired out Of the carberators and also backfires out of the exhaust with white smoke. Doesn't start. I think it's bad rings but not sure. Any ideas????

Was it running before it threw a rod? (Of course it was, how else would it throw a rod. How WELL was it running?)

How much of each engine made it to the final product?

    How long since it ran?

Hopefully you adjusted the valves and cleaned the carbs.

All the usual 'stuff' when you get a 'new' bike, but in this case, it's just the engine.

Chuck Hahn is not too far from you. Give him a shout, see if he can help.
